Donald Trump, Enemy of the Constitution
REASON ^ | 3 Feb 16 | Damon Root

Posted on 03/03/2016 11:05:05 AM PST by elhombrelibre

Trump has trashed free speech, religious liberty, property rights, and limits on executive power.

Here's a question for you to puzzle over. Can you name the single most unconstitutional thing Donald Trump has proposed or endorsed so far in the 2016 presidential race?

Not an easy question to answer, is it? Do you start with Trump's efforts to suppress immigration by gutting the 14th Amendment? Or do you perhaps point to Trump's long war on the Fifth Amendment and its protections for property rights, as exemplified by Trump's embrace of boundless eminent domain powers for the government and Trump's own shameful record of seeking to personally profit when government officials seize homes and businesses and then hand the bulldozed land over to crony capitalist real estate developers?

Either of the above could serve as an answer to my opening question. But when it comes to Trump's unconstitutional agenda, there are plenty of other noxious options to choose from.

What about Trump's call for a "total and complete shutdown" of Muslims entering the United States? That stance manages to offend multiple constitutional principles in a single bound, including such bedrock concepts as religious liberty, due process, and equal protection.

Speaking of religious liberty, there is also Trump's belief that the government should have the power to close mosques. Needless to say, the First Amendment plainly forbids the government from taking the truly authoritarian step of shuttering houses of worship, be they mosques, churches, synagogues, or temples.

I.e. you sound, at best, like you have a hot button irritant problem yourself.

Dealing with foolish behavior without becoming a fool yourself is an art.

No reason to harm a messenger that does not have a message other then his own emotional hysteric hatred for Trump.

You merely treat them with the bemused contempt their childish antic deserve

Gosh, how I used to respect Reason Magazine. Root would have us believe our Constitution is indeed a suicide pact.

Let’s hope he knows enough to boot all those welfare sucking parasites back south of the Rio.

We have become the dumping ground for Latin America’s problems.

These people are stupid, stupid, stupid.
It takes them GENERATIONS to break through double-digit IQ’s.

To be honest, nothing. At first I tried being cordial to the more devoted Cruz supporters and even attempted to engage them in honest debate. After being called several names including cultist, I came to the realization that the hard core supporters can't be reasoned with. It's their way or the highway and if you don't see it their way, well then your either retarded or brainwashed.

With the media and washed out pols piling on our current front runner, it seems rather odd to me that they join in. They seem unaware of the fact that if Cruz were leading, the same thing would be happening to him.

This is from a person who has repeatedly said that I would vote for Cruz if he were the nominee. However, I can't seem to get the same pledge out many of them. Instead, they declare that they are going 3rd party.

Sorry for the long reply, but, for me, the effort of trying to calm their antics has proven fuitile. I only try to point out some of the more hysterical ones and when the posts are outlandish, call them on it.

I was thinking the same thing, Reason was once a consistent source of in-depth exposition.

Trump’s underlying blue collar character is really offputting to academics who need to get out more, and to think tank critters who are acting a little too prissy.

Richard Feynman was a crazy drummer who also liked fast cars and racing in the desert. He was thrown in jail a few times for wreckless behavior. I think his wrecklessness was a way of resetting his creative spark.

Intellectuals should get outside, run, chase skirts, get a little drunk and get in touch with their inner primate rather than fixate on Donald’s colorful vulgarisms. It just might do them a world of good.

In 2006, Trump threatened to sue Rosie O’Donnell, then a co-host on The View, after she said he was "bankrupt."

It might or might not have been true depending on whether or not she was claiming personal bankruptcy as opposed to Chapter 11. Whatever the case, it was not slander.

In 2011, Mac Miller's rap included the "lyrics," "Take over the world when I’m on my Donald Trump sh!t; Look at all this money, ain't that some sh!t?" That is a high crime against art, but it isn't defamatory. Trump threatened to sue.

In 2011, Trump threatened to sue Lawrence O’Donnell for suggesting he was worth less than $1 billion. Again: not slander by any known standard.

In 2012, Trump sued Miss USA contestant Sheena Monnin for exercising her free speech rights. Her statements against the pageant were false and probably did cause actual harm. But is there a pattern emerging?

In 2013 Bill Maher made a joke in reference to Trump's birther challenges. When Maher didn't pay for making good on his claim that his father "was not an orangutan" Trump sued him for the $5 million. Parody has special protections, especially when it involves statements that are preposterously false. Trump either didn't know that, or didn't care.

Trump threatened to sue Ted Cruz for "negative campaign commercials." [read: telling the Truth about Grumpf.] Truly a risible basis for action if ever there was one. Cruz called him on his bluff. Of course His Babyness backed down.

I can also list pretty easily the various news outlets tRump has sued if you like. None of his lawsuits have been successful.

In addition to infringing on other people's free speech, Trump has also sued businesses, hotels, governments, the entire country of Scotland, and even an American Indian tribe.

Virtually none of his lawsuits have produced any result, except to promote his dubious "brand."

He's a baby. Period.

OK, chief...I was gonna let this thread slide, right up until your BS comment. And I would like to offer a big ol’ screw you to that.

I am an American patriot, consider myself a very proud III%er (look it up, because I’m quite sure you have no idea what it means, you frickin’ tool). I wore the uniform of this country with pride and would gladly do so again and lay my life down so dirtbags like you can spout your drivel on a website.

I despise Trump, precisely because I believe he IS a grave threat to the Constitution of the United States that I swore an oath to protect and defend against all enemies, foreign and domestic. So go get fitted for your brown shirt but, if you keep posting your crap like that, you’re gonna find yourself on the wrong side of that equation, chief.

Don’t you dare impugn my patriotism to my country when I’d be willing to bet MY LIFE that I have given and would give much more in support of her, that my brothers have given much more in support of her than some backwards keyboard commando ever dreamed of.

Buy a clue.

He’s had too many successful lawsuits to mention, most of which are settled out of court, e.g. Univision. And the effect is the defendants stop attacking and those thinking of attacking become pussified. It’s not suppression if free speech, it’s exercising free speech and defending oneself in the process. Taking someone to court doesn’t suppress, it respects the rule of law. Those he sued are now quiet; get a clue.

And get over yourself:

Do you start with Trump's efforts to suppress immigration by gutting the 14th Amendment?

What does the 14th Amendment have to do with immigration, and how is Donald Trump gutting it?

This is goofy.
