Sarah Palin endorsement fails as Ted Cruz beats Donald Trump to win Alaska

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A high-profile endorsement from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin couldn’t deliver this state for Donald Trump as Ted Cruz won the Alaska Republican presidential preference poll.

Cruz, a U.S. senator from Texas, edged the national GOP front-runner in Alaska for his third win of Super Tuesday. Trump was still the night’s big Republican winner with victories in seven states. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who finished third in Alaska, won one state.

The other two candidates on Tuesday’s ballot in Alaska — John Kasich and Ben Carson — did not garner enough support to win any delegates.

The Alaska GOP reported high voter turnout that exceeded 2012 levels as thousands of Alaskans decided which of the remaining GOP presidential candidates would get their support. Party spokeswoman Suzanne Downing said in an email that volunteers manning polling sites were somewhat overwhelmed by the “unbelievable” turnout.

Some sites saw long lines, including the convention center that served as the lone polling location in Juneau, where dozens of people, including state legislators, lobbyists and Alaska’s first lady, waited their turn to vote. First lady Donna Walker declined to say who she supported.

State Sen. John Coghill, a Republican from North Pole, wasn’t shy in declaring his support for Cruz, seeing Cruz as closest to his own philosophy. He said Cruz and Rubio — but Cruz especially — seem to be more supportive of states’ rights. Coghill is among the state legislators who have been concerned about federal overreach. He said he would support whomever the Republican nominee winds up being.

Congrats to Cruz for winning AK. A win is a win.

I’m a Trump #1, Cruz #2. Can we all agree that we need to BURY Rubio? If you’d have told me at the outset, that we could end up with Trump vs Cruz for the nomination, I’d have been a happy camper. So let’s crush Rubio now eh?

"semi-literate and often incomprehensible statements for years to come."

BS!

Sarah's sentences are almost always grammatically correct.

Can you give an example of an incorrectly formed sentence of hers?

>> The polls showed Trump winning big in Alaska (+10%) and that didn’t happen <<

Interesting. A big bunch of last-minute deciders?

Maybe we’ll see more of that phenomenon, as the news about Trump’s outright, flat-out lie on Sunday about David Duke continues to “marinate” and soak into the electorate’s collective consciousness.

(I heard a report this morning that only about 25% of voters had yet heard about the lie, and only about 20% had heard anything about Trump University. But just wait until the negative ads begin in earnest. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.)

If the GOPe is desperate enough, they will throw more support at Cruz to stop Trump until they can get to Plan B.

Lindsey Graham knows the rules of the game and I’m not surprised he’s throwing crumbs at Cruz.

Trump has to be denied a first ballot victory. Finding ways to keep Trump from winning a majority of delegates is Plan A.

If Trump fails to win the first ballot at the convention GOPe handpicked delegates bound to Trump in the first ballot go away.

Cruz got 12 delegates, Trump got 11....

Also, it’s better if Cruz stays in the race until the GOPe shills (Rubio and Kasich) drop out... That way we’ve destroyed the power of the GOPe. If they try to pull a fast one at the convention the Trump and Cruz people can bolt the party... We’ll still win... and the GOPe will be finished.

How about, "I support Donald Trump!" No conservative can survive supporting a Democrat. If you don't accept he's a Dem, how about not supporting a RINO.

Cruz won 12 delegates, Trump won 11 and Rubio won five. Not much of a win for Cruz!!!!

Not much of a win for Trump in Arkansas then right??

RE: Example: Trump wants to destroy the 2nd Amendment.

I think Cruz said we are one liberal justice away from destroying the second amendment and he’s not sure what kind of justice Trump is going to nominate.

That’s hardly calling Trump a killer of the second amendment.

He said:

“If we nominate the wrong Republican — if we nominate a Republican president who doesn’t care about the court, who isn’t committed to the court, they’re going to make the same mistake Republican president after Republican president has made of not investing the capital, not fighting,”

Now, I’d like to hear Trump ASSURE us that he will nominate a justice close to or similar to Scalia. Not someone like his own sister.

I read that Dems in Alaska voted for Cruz, maybe that put him over the top. Real Dems know that Trump is the man to beat.

Sad but true, the biased media manages to win out over conservative values once again. Sarah paid a high price for running with McCain. She was attacked on every level possible. Children included. Ugly stuff. Easy for us to cast all that aside, and come down on her for not being what we want her to be. She still is a smart and conservative voice for America. Thank you Sarah Palin.

Trump already mentioned two names that are ultra conservative. Didn’t you read that? His comments about his sister were mere pleasantries. What was he supposed to say about her? “She’s a rotten baby killer and she’s dead to me”?

Sarah has stopped being serious and started being smartass girl. A shame because I think she can be a good leader.

"And Palin’s endorsement carries weight across the country, not just in her home state."

That's true. She's still an admirable figure head. Her muscle in Alaska has been dinged good for a while, if you remember all the Murkowski business.

RE: Trump already mentioned two names that are ultra conservative. Didn’t you read that?

I must have missed it. Who are they?

But my point is Ted Cruz NEVER CALLED Donald Trump a second amendment killer as alleged by the previous poster. He is giving fair warning and perhaps putting Trump on notice that should he win, he better live up to his promises.

I left the election thread last night figuring Trump had Alaska locked up because so many were citing polls that showed this to be so....and Sarah Palin's endorsement. So, yeah, this was a surprise.

The David Duke thing would have been so easy to shut down but he didn't. Not smart on his part. The dems will absolutely make hay with the university. I also don't understand why he insists on continuing to praise PP. Maybe he does it to increase appeal in open primaries. Will it matter in the long run? Hell if I know, but Florida and Ohio will tell us a lot.
