Vanity: With Trump libel laws, Free Republic would be sued out of existence on day one. (Discussion)

If these new libel laws were to take effect, Free Republic would be sued out of existence on day one.

If these laws took effect the only media we would have would be rich corporate liberal media.

New York Times, Washington Post etc...

This could be called the mainstream media only law.

You need to look up the legal definition of “fair use”.

One of the major ways to change that is to make losers pay all fees, and eliminate forum shopping. Under current rules, only the deep pockets can handle “business” decisions to sue or threaten to sue the small guy into submission or total destruction.

You honestly think your little posts on FR are offensive enough to involve a libel suit? Compared to publications like NYT that informed Osama how he was being tracked or the crap spewed from major media outlets, your posts are your personal rant read by few.

Yes, "legitimate" libel is actionable. Would Trump, with his new laws, like to stifle this "Cuban," for stating an opinion?
On Comedy Central’s Thursday broadcast of “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” businessman and owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks Mark Cuban proclaimed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is “trying to f-ck the country.”

Cuban said, “He’s just getting started, Seriously there’s so much more to come. They’re not playing for real yet. There is nothing real at stake. This is all just chit chat. He’s just warming up the audience. He’s like that guy who walks into the bar, and will say whatever it’ll take to get laid. Only in this case he’s not trying to f-ck some girl. He’s trying to f-ck the country.”

When asked about his previous support for Trump, Cuban said, “Everybody’s got that friend that they pick on, that one guy that you know has a good heart and wants to do the right thing but does some of the stupidest sh-t all the time. I actually like him and get along with him, but he’s kinda gone off.”

Trump constantly shoots from the lip. I hope that’s it and he doesn’t really want to shut down anyone who criticizes him.

You realize that the laws used there to do that are what thus thread is about?
Those same kind of laws being floated as a “good idea” here?
Why create the possibility of a repeat?

Have you watched any of Mr Trump's campaign speeches?

I have watched a few but he can never get past how great and wonderful he is. Seriously, the guy talks more about how rich he is than the Constitution and how he will uphold it. Not my type, sorry.

It's common for protesters to start screaming nonsense about Trump

That is common at all political rallies. Trump does not have exclusive rights to that. It happens at all of them. Sorry, do not feel sorry for Donald.

That tactic invariably backfires because after eight years of Obama we've learnt that those who screech the loudest have the least to say. Maybe something for you to think about.

I have thought about it and Trump is just not for me. I have already voted for Cruz in the Primary here in Texas. He kept his promises to me when he went to DC.

Thanks for the civil questions I appreciate them. Most Trump supporters just want to attack me so I attack back. They will invariably attack me over this. Just watch.

Yes, that would help.

But many people still could not afford to be tied up in court for years on end and finance a defense in the meantime ... on spec that they would win.

People like Trump can afford that, but most people cannot.

Even beyond the money there is the stress and strain and the time commitment, which in the meantime you cannot focus as much of your work, your family etc.

I understand Trump is talking about going after big newspapers. But the change I assume he is talking about would have far reaching consequences to much smaller and vulnerable people who are speaking out.

Mark Steyn’s and NRO’s situation are good examples.

You are clueless.

And ignorant.

And that’s being nice.

You have no idea how FR was almost done it by law suits years ago.

I know what fair use is.

You are siding with those that tried to shut down FR.

Nice.

Did you post excerpts back in 1998?

Yes. Steyn is a good example.

We don’t need to be more like Europe or Canada.

I am not ignorant nor clueless but you are rude, nasy and have a hugely overinflated opinion of yourself. The American people are standing up and the BS once tolerated is over. FR will survive long after libs or their BS. Try not trashing people.

“I am not ignorant nor clueless...”

Keep telling yourself that.

Having ignorance pointed out is not a personal attack but simply reflects on a lack of knowledge or understanding.

It says nothing about character or knowledge in other areas.

Your entire post/thread is projection and straw man, so there’s that.

Besides, Trump is likely a FReeper ;-)
