Sheriff’s office seizes 19 roaming donkeys

SIERRA VISTA — The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office has corralled more than a dozen donkeys and shipped them off for auction after their previous owner repeatedly let them loose to wander the Naco area.

Animal control officers and livestock agents with the Arizona Department of Agriculture recently rounded up 19 of the animals, which have caused everything from traffic hazards to property damage, with reports to the sheriff’s office dating back to last summer, said Carol Capas, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.

“They would be in the roadway or near the roadway, on people’s private property and causing damage,” Capas said. “It’s been an ongoing issue.”

I see donkeys in the fields where I live constantly. They’re mixed in with the beef cows to protect the calves and other cows from coyotes. Great deterrents....

Nah. He’s going to get sued for expecting them to have ID’s for voting.

This made the news? It must be a slow news cycle. The problem is that donkeys as a pet became a fad not too long ago, but then people discovered they actually have to be fed, and they reproduce. We have so many unwanted donkeys in my county that you can’t even give them away at auction, so people just turn them loose to run wild until the county picks them up. Then, the county has to use taxpayer funds to pasture and feed them.

A landowner towards Austin allows mountain bikers to use his property and also camp.

He has a passel of donkeys on his property - the smallest, friendliest ones they make, almost like dogs.

They are one helluva Coyote killer. Kick like a mule and deliver some serious blows. A good breed and natural enemy to coyotes.

In my neck of the woods I have had horses, cows, goats, chickens, deer, wild turkeys and hogs cross the road in front of me at various times, sometimes in herds or flocks:turkeys, deer, goats and chickens.

Coyotes? I know I’ve personally seen at least a dozen here in N GA in the past few years.

They play hell on calves, small dogs and cats here. The Bears mostly root after the garbage cans and make a mess.

Same here, I hear them in the woods near the house carrying on. I have listened to them get a stray or lost dog by itself, you hear the dog barking and then in a few minutes the pack attacks and you hear the blood curdling howls of agony at being torn apart and the packs yaps and then dead silence.

Bears are increasing in my area and we have been careful about our garbage and putting it out on trash day that morning only, otherwise kept in garage. I have had to run two out of my yard on occasions, once trying to get in garbage and once trying to tangle with my dog. Shotgun blast into the ground and removing garbage did the trick.

My mother-in-law, my only neighbor about 150 yrds. from my house has a pool and a pool house and the bears have tried to get inside it a few times. Once she forgot to put her garbage in the garage and they tore the screen door down and went through it and then tried to bite through the fridge in the house. They wouldn’t go through the door to the room where the pool chemicals were stored, smell must have repelled them.

I bought a Walmart hand pump sprayer like half quart or so and put half water and half Walmart Louisiana Hot Sauce and hang it over the can grab bar. I usually spray the can inside and around the top once or twice a week.

I haven’t had any bear tip overs since I started.
