Thus occurred the spectacle of the leader of the Christian church, on Christmas Day, in the great Basilica of St. Peter, placing a crown on the head of the king -- and prostrating himself in a Roman ritual resembling an act of emperor worship.
It didn't matter that Charles had multiple wives and mistresses. Nor did it trouble the pontiff that he had a reputation for ruthlessness, earned during his wars against the Saxons, a Germanic tribe of pagan worshipers. In 782, in the Massacre of Verden, Charles ordered the execution of 4,500 prisoners, apparently for their refusal to convert to Christianity.
Here was a political leader who knew how to get things done, who could get tough with the church's enemies, who could protect the empire from barbarian invaders. With the church on his side, he would restore Rome to its ancient glory. Sound familiar?
Thus evangelical voters joined other South Carolina Republicans in choosing Trump, by an 11 percent margin over his closest competitor, to "make America great again." According to a recent Bloomberg Poll, they believe Trump is the candidate most likely to "keep their family safe" and "would be most feared by America's enemies."

When all else fails, there’s always Satan.
As a nation, we are already there.
That is who I was thinking about, Charles Martel, but mistaken his grandson.
“King David repented of his sin, and was ‘a man after God’s own heart’. Can we say either of Mr. Trump?”
How do we know what is in God’s heart? Maybe Trump, whether he knows it or not, is God’s instrument?
Right now, this is still the age in which the good news of the Gospel is being proclaimed, that is why there is delay.

Charlemagne? We should be so lucky! If I was convinced Trump would be that good, he would be my first choice and not my backup. Next they will be frantically warning people that Trump will be just like Reagan.
“Beep beep!” Watch out Wile E. Coyote the anvil is falling!”
Thank you for bringing up Godwin’s law. I have read a couple of articles about it. Really interesting.
Your ignorance is showing.
Izlame had murdered tens of millions by 782. The fact that the scum who hate Christianity have spent the past sixty years revising history to hide the facts is no excuse. There are plenty of good books around written prior to the sixties, even prior to WWI, that lay out the facts rather than the revisions including many written by Muzzies who were bragging about how many infidels they slaughtered and how much territory they conquered.
If they had not been stopped by Charles Martel in 732 at Tours France there may not have been any Christianity.
Thanks Citizen Zed. It's nice of the Washington Post to join Red State, Glenn Beck, and a host of FINOs, in what is obviously a coordinated campaign of concern trolling. Gosh, it's almost as if they all have the same boss.
Heh.
I wasn’t a Trump fan until after all the degenerate, thumb-sucking, intellectually inbred sacks of moral cowardice started running their spunk sumps against him.
Ooops, thanks for that.
I thought they were not a problem (for Europe) until a few hundred years later. I was wrong.
Such desperation is pitiable. And laughable. Trying to balance the two here.
I believe the 'merciful alternative' was to remove their thumb and index finger from their draw hand.
Crowning Charlemagne was no accident and was a great thing for Western Civilization. It promoted the Christianization of Germany and kept Rome free from Byzantine control.
That was an amazing sentence, right there. :')
Early on I'd have taken Cruz or Walker; Trump's first encounter with media hostility over something he'd said resulted in mimeo'd response in old media and online, that he was "finished", and that I now see was just a managed, canned response by shills and drones. He gave Jeb a beating, and whaddayaknow, we got to see quite a display of phony outrage, most recently regarding the Iraq meme. Now that Jeb is out, and gave at best feeble responses to any of that stuff, it's unlikely DT will ever bring any of it up again. As the Diceman used to say, if you can't party with the big boys, don't show up.
