Before Donald Trump, the sad history of when Christians anointed another political bully
Washington Post ^ | 2-22-2016 | Joseph Loconte

Posted on 02/22/2016 6:20:01 AM PST by Citizen Zed

Thus occurred the spectacle of the leader of the Christian church, on Christmas Day, in the great Basilica of St. Peter, placing a crown on the head of the king -- and prostrating himself in a Roman ritual resembling an act of emperor worship.

It didn't matter that Charles had multiple wives and mistresses. Nor did it trouble the pontiff that he had a reputation for ruthlessness, earned during his wars against the Saxons, a Germanic tribe of pagan worshipers. In 782, in the Massacre of Verden, Charles ordered the execution of 4,500 prisoners, apparently for their refusal to convert to Christianity.

Here was a political leader who knew how to get things done, who could get tough with the church's enemies, who could protect the empire from barbarian invaders. With the church on his side, he would restore Rome to its ancient glory. Sound familiar?

Thus evangelical voters joined other South Carolina Republicans in choosing Trump, by an 11 percent margin over his closest competitor, to "make America great again." According to a recent Bloomberg Poll, they believe Trump is the candidate most likely to "keep their family safe" and "would be most feared by America's enemies."

In 782, in the Massacre of Verden, Charles ordered the execution of 4,500 prisoners, apparently for their refusal to convert to Christianity.

It's a little more complicated than that. Look up "Massacre of Verden" on Wikipedia. It looks like this was a retaliation for breaking a truce and killing nobles and counts, not mere religious culling.

---------- I will add that back then prisoners of war were not taken. Charles could not release these men because they would wage war on him. Trying to get them to convert to Christianity can be seen as a mercy because they would be allowed to live and return home. If Charles was a pagan and he defeated fellow pagans he would have killed every one of them after the battle or sold them into slavery.

Look, in medieval warfare, it was almost impossible to keep thousands of prisoners fed and healthy and non-combative. They didn’t have the means to take care of them, there was no Geneva Convention, and military leaders didn’t trust them. Henry 5 also executed thousands of prisoners (archers) at Agincourt. He gets condemned for it but I don’t know what else he could have done.

King David repented of his sin, and was “a man after God’s own heart.” Can we say either of Mr. Trump?

Charles the Great also known as Charlemagne. The Holy Roman Emperor. Modern day France, Germany, Northern Italy, and so forth. As such, he ruled from 800 to 814.

Notice that Charles did not follow the Geneva Conventions. These would emerge as “rules of war” many centuries later, and then be codified in the late 19th century. According to liberals, Christians of the distant past are to be judged by these rules, but not non-Christians of the distant past or even of the present.

Charlemagne means "Charles the Great", as in a great ruler, "Father of Europe". The first man to reunite a good portion of what had been the Western Roman Empire, proclaimed Roman Emperor by the Pope himself. He lived in a brutal age governed by brutal men and his methods were normal, even moderate for his time. Only a genuinely ignorant person, box check one on the Washington Post employment application form, would think a comparison with Charlemagne an insult.

Another hysteric emotion base diatribe from the Conservative Pharisees

Sorry wasn’t interested when the Left tried to substitute emotion and volume for thought. Certainly am not going to buy those tactics when “Conservatives” attempt to use them.

It would be more accurate to say when the “catholic hierarchy” anointed Charlemagne. Most of the “Christians’ were but mere serfs to the Catholic church. And frankly they hadn’t done much for the citizenry except extract money from them through the fear of going to hell.

True story, Charlemange was a conquering hero that helped give birth to France and most of Western Europe, by being a uniter after he conquered. Charlemagne is greatly revered in French history and as a national hero.

Just another WAPO writer that only took political science and learned to hate giving commoners the right to vote. Through reading Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and the Castro boys.

Did he build any walls anywhere....then he should be excommuniticated!!!!for he is not a Christian.
