The first trailer for the remake of Roots was released on Thursday, promising all of the drama and heartbreak that captivated audiences nearly thirty years ago. The History Channel's remake of the 1977 miniseries, based on Alex Haley's novel of the same name, is due out on Memorial Day and features an all-star cast including Forest Whitaker, Anika Noni Rose, Anna Paquin and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Roots follows the struggles of one African American family told over several generations, starting with Kunte Kinte, an African warrior sold into slavery, through to his great-grandchildren fighting for their freedom during the Civil War.

They actually go the history right this time at least how Kunta was captured to be shipped across the Atlantic. In the original it was whites but this version actually shows it was fellow Africans from another tribe who do the initial dirty work for the slavers.

Are they going to faithfully recreate Alex Haley’s plagiarism?

Or howz’ ‘bout the black muslims hauling them to the shore to be sold as slaves. “White” people did NOT run thru the jungle looking for slaves.

1977-2016 equals nearly 40 years. We had a kid in school named Kent that we tagged as Kunta.

Yeah.....all the self pitying ferals need is another visitation of a horrible period of colonial and early American history that ended 150 years ago.

It's time to show stories about how all Americans can pull themselves up by their bootstraps to make something of themselves and be responsible to their families and their communities.

My aunt had a fiesty Siamese cat at the time. We dubbed her, “Kunta Kitty.”
(Apologies to any Cruz supporters offended by the term)

Forest Whitaker is an excellent actor. I'm usually not a fan of remakes but his involvement gives some assurance of quality.

Yes it is, and one that most are unaware of and probably will refuse to ever believe. Kinda pokes a big hole in the Whites have always taken advantage of Blacks meme.

Yep, fanning the flames makes some folks a tidy sum.

Might I also recommend the video presentation of “The First Rosa” at LCMS.org.

The story of Rosa Young, a black girl growing up in the South that finds the gifts of God through the evangelists of the Lutheran Church (Missouri).

I have a 1st edition of her book “Light in the Dark Belt” and I look forward to viewing the coming video production. She is the reason behind Concordia Selma (a topic for a different day...)

The comedian Red Buttons talking about “Roots”

(Paraphrasing here...)
Red Buttons:”I tried to watch “Roots”.But after about 5 minutes into it and nobody scored a basket, I turned it off...”

Looks like it might be worth watching. But since I don’t have cable I’ll have to wait until it comes out on DVD.

Outta print, AFAIK.

Might get a later edition on Amazon in the OOP section.
If CPH is resurrecting the book, you can check there [cph.org]. It is truly inspiring.

I was lucky to have an “inside” connection for my #1.

Looks pretty interesting. Faults and all, I actually really like the original miniseries. Ultimately, it’s storytelling, and it was well done. I know some people get up in arms about historical accuracy, but when I watch a movie, I don’t take it as gospel truth, regardless of if it’s “based on a true story” or not. Roots isn’t any more or less of a documentary than Gangs of New York, but both make for good entertainment.
