Icy ebb and flow influenced by hydrothermal activity
Science Daily ^ | 1/29/2016 | Univ of Connecticut

Hydrothermal activity along the mid-ocean ridge system suggests that the release of molten rock, or magma, in response to changes in sea level plays a significant role in the earth's climate.

The last million years of Earth's history was dominated by the cyclic advance and retreat of ice sheets over large swaths of North America. During cold glacial intervals, ice sheets reached as far south as Long Island and Indiana, while during warm interglacial periods the ice rapidly retreated to Greenland. It has long been known that ice ages occur every 40,000 years or so, but the cause of rapid transition between glacial and interglacial periods has remained a mystery.

While conventional wisdom says that this icy ebb and flow is an interaction between the world's oceans, the ice itself, and the earth's atmosphere, an article appearing in the Jan. 28, 2016 issue of the journal Science sheds new light on the role that the earth itself may play in this climatological ballet.

This article makes sense. It also has no real relationship to the AGW folks. Plate movements, splits, collisions, volcanism and the like are the engine behind climate change. This article has implications to the cycle of ice ages we're in a warm period of just now.

The sun MIGHT affect our climate.
Molten rock coming to the surface of the earth MIGHT affect our climate.

The only thing we can say for sure is that your SUV affects the climate. The rest is mere speculation ...

Hmmm---

"hydro" -- water
"thermal" -- heat
"activity" -- change

uhh--duh??

Lund says, "Mid-ocean range magmatism -- the release of molten rock through volcanic vents or fissures -- is driven by seafloor spreading and decompression melting of the upper mantle"

So all Soetoro has to do is issue an executive order banning seafloor spreading! Problem solved.

Enter algore in search of his next billion dollars, introducing his latest global warming development - the invention of the deep water staple gun to hold the rift together.

I have to drive my SUV a whole year to feed four acres of rain forest.

According to Gore, the temperature at the center of earth is "millions of degrees". He was off by 'only' a factor between 400-500!!
(several million vs 7230 deg F)

Al Gore: Earth's Interior 'Extremely Hot, Several Million Degrees'

By Noel Sheppard | November 18, 2009

[snip]

CONAN O'BRIEN, HOST: ...to create energy, and it sounds to me like an evil plan by Lex Luthor to defeat Superman. Can you, can you tell me, is this a viable solution, geothermal energy?

AL GORE: It definitely is, and it's a relatively new one. People think about geothermal energy - when they think about it at all - in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places there are these incredibly hot rocks, 'cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees, and the crust of the earth is hot ...

[snip]

The physics and astronomy website Physlink contests Gore's absurd claim:

It is approximately 4000 degC [7230 degF] at the centre of the Earth.

the invention of the deep water staple gun to hold the rift together.

And why can’t he invent the water staple gun? He invented the internet so I think he can invent a simple thing like a water staple gun. FlimFlam man and all around husler billionaire can do that.

Well, well. The release of many cubic kilometers of molten magma along the mid-ocean ridges, warms the ocean water. Who’d’a thunk it??

The melting of the Arctic ice may be laid directly to this effect. There is a part of the Pacific Rift “ring of fire” that extends into the relatively shallow Arctic Ocean, and it has been extraordinarily active of recent, melting the ice cap from beneath. The resulting outflow of relatively fresh water (low salinity), a surface flow, has resulted in the replacement of warm flows from the Gulf Stream flowing INTO the Arctic ocean at some depth (deep current), further exacerbating the melt effect, until it cools sufficiently.

All water, saline or fresh, assumes a temperature of approximately 38 degrees F (abut 4 gradients C) at depth from 500 to 1,500 meters depth, and this temperature is relatively stable to even great depths, except at those points where there are subsurface volcanic vents. At very great depths, the enormous pressure keeps the escaping gas from actually bursting forth as a gas jet, but the water in the immediate vicinity may be superheated to 700 degrees F or more, but because of the pressure, remains a liquid. These jets of water, rising rapidly through sometimes several MILES of water under a decreasing pressure gradient, warm the layers it passes through, setting up a vast thermal current from the depths.

Even a very few years ago, none of this was understood, or even suspected.

Convection currents of greater or lesser force depending on lava output which varies according to water depth? Sounds very reasonable.

The current greater water depth over the fissure zone would now be suppressing the heat releasing process. Once ice formation (glacial increase) removes sufficient water pressure (less ocean depth) over the volcanic zones, more heat should enter the oceans.

Change the average ocean density by displacing water with air filled volumes, and test the theory. A long time lag exists between ocean depth changes and volcanic response to the overburden pressure change. The experiment might have to run for a long time for measurable results.
