In the 1980s it was the 49ers (Bill Walsh), Redskins (Joe Gibbs) and Giants (Bill Parcells) who were dominant, and most people can't even remember prominent AFC coaches and teams from that era.
The other problem -- at least in the 1980s -- is that the AFC often seemed to have very flawed, incomplete teams run through the playoffs. The Denver Broncos of the 1980s were very small on defense and had no real running game, so they were pushed around very easily by NFC East teams in two Super Bowls. I've often said that the Cleveland Browns would have been a much stronger opponent than the Broncos in those two Super Bowls -- simply because they played an NFC-type of game back then.
The Buffalo Bills team that lost four straight Super Bowls epitomized the flaws of those AFC teams. They had lots of talent and could beat anyone on any given day, but their "run & shoot" offense was a disaster at a time when a strong ground game that kept the opposing offense on the bench was a major weapon.
It might not have been the best played, but it’s iconic. It’s got a nickname, everybody know who lost it, and it was pretty darn exciting, even if a failed play is the one that mattered most. It’s no Purple People Eater vs Steel Curtain
(my personal favorite) but it’s Wide Right.
Hey — the “Ickey Shuffle” was a nickname, too. But like “Wide Right,” the team that spawned the nickname lost the game!
The score was only 16-6 but for me the best stat that indicated total dominance was Steelers had 249 rushing yards while the Vikings had 119 TOTAL YARDS, 17 rushing and 102 yards passing.
A real butt whippen.
Dolphins-Vikings was a real butt-whipping, with Csonka getting 145 yards. That was pure dominance.
Parity comes from a lot of places. And coaching trees would certainly be one of them. We’re in our 3rd of 4th generation of coaches that believe in more than just execution, and most of the top end guys follow the family tree to the 1st generation. We really do have the Any Given Sunday league Rozelle dreamed about, a lot went into it, some stuff he didn’t even know would be necessary.
LOL, reminds me of John McKay's response to the question about his team's execution, "I'm in favor of it."
One of the great moments in NFL press conferences.
Ickey Shuffle ushered in the modern age of over celebration in the NFL. Sometimes things are the top of the list not because of how good they are, but because they define the world into before and after.
0-2 at the half, great game. That’s why I still love defense more than offense.
I hope this upcoming SB is competitive and not a blow-out.
I think the Patriots would have given Carolina a better run tor the money, but we’ll see. Hopefully we’re not stuck watching the second half just to see the commercials.
SB XX should be rated #1 just for the SB Shuffle alone!
lol
39. Super Bowl XXII
Washington Redskins 42, Denver Broncos 10
San Diego, Jan. 31, 1988
I watched the game in a movie theater that had been converted into a pub. The place was full of Bronco fans who were whooping it up in the 1st quarter. Midway through the 2nd quarter that whooping by Denver supporters had been replaced with a whipping by Redskin players.
My other favorite was when the Saints beat the Colts in Miami in 2010.
Hank Baskett...propelled to reality tv stardom by a Superbowl screw-up, LOL.
I found some old “As It Happened” SB Threads....I’ll try to find more...

Thanks!
And they even made an quirky indie film about it. Not sure I would 100% recommend it but it is different. Buffalo 66 (1998)
Well that looks like an interesting movie. Dumped it in my Netflix queue, 4 years from now it’ll float to the top and I’ll have no idea why I put it in there. That’s half the fun with Netflix “why did I want to watch this?”
