The worlds largest canyon may lie deep beneath the ice sheets on Antarctica, according to a new discovery by UK scientists.
While the depth of the discovery is comparative to the Grand Canyon it dwarfs the US landmark by 555km in length.
Satellite data recovered by a team of scientists led by Durham University revealed the previously unknown canyon system which is thought to be more than 1000km long and 1km deep buried under several kilometres of ice.
While the discovery is yet to be confirmed by direct measurements, researchers believe the canyon beneath the ice sheet may be so ancient it was carved out by water prior to the formation of the ice sheet.
An airborne survey taking targeted radio-echo sounding measurements over the whole buried landscape is now underway in the hopes of confirming the existence and size of the canyon and lake system later this year.
Lead researcher Stewart Jamieson from Durham University said it was a region in Antarctica scientists still know very little about.
Our analysis provides the first evidence that a huge canyon and a possible lake are present beneath the ice in Princess Elizabeth Land, Dr Jamieson said.
Itâs astonishing to think that such large features could have avoided detection for so long.
This is a region of the Earth that is bigger than the UK and yet we still know little about what lies beneath the ice. In fact, the bed of Antarctica is less well known than the surface of Mars.
If we can gain better knowledge of the buried landscape we will be better equipped to understand how the ice sheet responds to changes in climate.
Co-Author Neil Ross from Newcastle University in the UK, said the discovery was only made possible thanks to a bipartisan collaboration with multiple government agencies.
Antarctic scientists have long recognised that because the way ice flows, the landscape beneath the ice sheet was subtly reflected in the topography of the ice sheet surface, he said.
Despite this, these vast deep canyons and potential large lake had been overlooked entirely.

Here dinosaurs that should be long extinct live and roam, as do a curious race of humanoid savages that appear to exhibit all the various phases of Man's evolutionary development. To survive long enough to repair and replenish the U-boat, wartime enemies must put aside their differences and cooperate with one another. But not everyone is playing from the Kumbaya songbook...

I read this as they found a cannon!
Or maybe one of these THINGamajiggers lurking. Ya never know.
Just wondering, in case anybody knows - can this same technology ‘look’ under sand as well as ice?
It might be nice to check under the Sahara for anymore Egyptian ruins - maybe other places, too, such as the Tigris/Euphrates area....?
Looking for stuff under the Egyptian sand is going to be a one shot event and then banned if it has not already been banned. None of the vested parties not Hawas nor Lehner want anything that would discredit or challenge the accepted status quo and their income and chain of grants.
They have already successfully banned optically stimulated luminescence (OSL)/optical dating. Those tests returned dates which were too old for the standard time line and just played havoc with an area of archaeology which is already in chaos.
There are also possible very interesting stuff buried under the Nile delta mud ... however, most of the places where one might look in the ME or North Africa are just plain too dangerous due to the present Islamic infestation.
There’s a Long-Lost Paleo-River Beneath the Sahara Desert Nobody Knew Existed
excerpt
Skonieczny and her colleagues were able to identify the paleo-river using an orbital satellite system called Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR). Using microwave sensing, PALSAR can peer into several meters into the Saharan sands and detect the fossil water still flowing there.
“There are also possible very interesting stuff buried under the Nile delta mud ... however, most of the places where one might look in the ME or North Africa are just plain too dangerous due to the present Islamic infestation.”
There is a lot of interesting artifacts and cities from past civilizations that are buried under up to 350’ of water and mud. I believe at the end of last Ice Age the Nile cut through a deep canyon to get into the Mediterranean, when sea levels rose the Nile started depositing sediment and soon filled up it’s canyon. The same with the Mississippi River. Much of the State of Louisiana’s land is under 10,000 years old.
The impossibility of the people we think of or have been taught to think of as the Old Kingdom Egyptians in Lower Egypt to have built the complex at Giza ... In those days, the area was ruled by the “Westerners” of whom we know extremely little - in fact bordering on nothing - the Nile delta was the center of their government - now buried.
Did they build the complex? A complex which was not built as separate structures at different times, but as one complex of which no one part works without the others and maybe all in one time period. Can we tell who built it when? Is there a difference between original construction and restoration?
What actually constitutes the original structures of the megalithics? Are they related to others around the world? Every one seems to want to look at all these structures as separate in time because anything else is too upsetting, I think. We need a continuity to be comfortable, but the world and the universe makes no such provision.
I think given an unlimited budget and no constrains by local governments a group of open minded not bound to any one version of prehistory were given the opportunity to explore, to really explore the Earth, prehistory would be completely rewritten. They might find that we are not who we think we are, but some one else.
Where are the Mountains of Madness on your map?
Not sure if this is up your alley or not ping... :)
Well done.
If they ever REALLY tried to make movies out of that guy’s stuff, look out.
A crack in the world!
Kind'a like the real temperature data that threw the AGW pseudo-scientists for a loss and made 'em start fudging the numbers, right?
Worse, because the number fudging can be easily refuted. This is locked in stone and all other facts theories are either by kooks aliens conspiracy theorist and so on - total condemnation and so discredited. This is the fundamental basis for western science and history; if there were any cracks the entire edifice will be shown for an 19th Century fraud and all of Western civilization rests on that foundation.
Before the Islamic invasions of the 6th and 7th century destroyed most of western civilization and classical Christianity turning North Africa from a gain basket to a semi-arid desert, there were many things in common use then that we do not credit the ancients. Most of this knowledge was destroyed and is only coming to light from scraps and bits that got overlooked or were still buried.
It wasn’t until the early 19th Century that the art of shipbuilding regained abilities that were in common use in Greek and Roman times; until then, no ship was built to match the size of the 360’ Syracusia built in 240 BC.
Lenses for optics and telescopes were not rediscovered until Galileo in the 15th Century. And of course, no one to this day, can cut and match stones as massive as 100 tons to the tolerances the ancients did.
World history as we know it prior to the 10th Century (to pick a point) is mostly a fabrication of assumptions, guesswork, guesstimates, and just plain lies woven together in a semi-coherent story to keep people in line and the money flowing to the fabricators.
I loved that part in “Spaceballs.”
