US Christmas lights use more energy than entire countries

Bright lights strung on American trees, rooftops and lawns account for 6.63 billion kilowatt hours of electricity consumption every year, according to a recent blog post by the Center for Global Development.

That's more than the national electricity consumption of many developing countries. El Salvador for one, uses 5.35 billion kilowatt hours, while Ethiopia consumes 5.30 billion and Tanzania 4.81 billion.

We irrigate our decorative cut-grass lawns with drinking water to. So?

Its Christmas eve here in Australia, just south of Adelaide, electricity is very very expensive, very few lights if at all, only ones i think that are popular run off batteries and solar panels.

I see maybe one house every 4 blocks. Less than a tenth of back home in Alaska.

We were once a “developing country”, too. But through, time, hard work, ingenuity and devotion, we studied, learned, researched, and persevered to make our country strong and powerful.

Not all things run an even race in the advancement of mankind. Politics, greed, corruption, and tyranny serve as the anchors to hold some civilizations back. We happened to get ours mostly right, and we enjoy the fruits of our labor.

Do...far from the guilt trip the bleeding hearts try on us, I am proud of our accomplishments and relish our good fortune.

What’s funny is, it’s Americans who are bitching about our Christmas lights, not the “developing countries” who don’t even celebrate it.

It’s easy to remember when China, Japan, and most of the Middle East were still “developing”.

I think that it is great that we live in a country that can use a lot of Christmas lights. We live where people have choices.

Nice and something to be proud of...

I call BS on this one. Communists take great joy in trying to make people feel guilty about living and enjoying a good life.

Yes. You are supposed to feel guilty! Liberals won’t be happy until we’re all living in small, cold, dimly lit enviro-boxes and eating three “squares” of organic nutripaste every day. It’s for the planet, don’t you know. Western civilization saw the planet and natural laws as something to be tamed and used to benefit man. The left wants to destroy man to save the planet.

This is a serious problem, all right, and it requires a serious solution. I propose a new Federal law that limits total U.S. Christmas light power consumption to no more than, say, the average power output of North Korea. It’s the only reasonable thing to do.

To make things fair, I suggest the new law allocate via a Christmas light lottery. Every U.S. household gets to enter the lottery a single time for a 100-light-string equivalent. Winners can choose to use their allocation for an indoor tree or for exterior decoration, but not both. Losers are nominally just chit out of luck. However, winners will be allowed to resell their allocation at whatever price they choose. This gives the losers SOME hope that they too might still have a chance at Christmas lighting. However, no one will be allowed to possess more than a single allocation, because otherwise those evil rich people are likely to end up with an unfair amount of Christmas lighting. You know, because they are rich. And evil.

These people are sick. Their main reference is an extremest and leftist website.

Center for Global Development

At this time of the year, sparkling trees and decorated lawns have taken over. A 2008 study from the US Energy Department's Energy Information Administration (EIA) found that decorative seasonal lights accounted for 6.6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity consumption every year in the United States. That's just 0.2% of the country's total electricity usage, but it could run 14 million refrigerators. It's also more than the national electricity consumption of many developing countries, such as El Salvador, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nepal, or Cambodia.

That is not exactly what the study was about. The study was about the benefits of LED lighting.

The section from the study:

2.2. Decorative Holiday Lights Even though the holiday season is just a few weeks of the year, the conversion of holiday lights from incandescent to LED sources would generate considerable energy savings. The potential annual energy savings of a complete market shift to LED holiday lights is approximately 64.4 TBtu of primary energy consumption, equivalent to the output of ninety percent of one large (1000 MW) electric power plant or the annual electricity consumption of almost five hundred thousand households. Along with significant energy savings, the adoption of LED sources would be accompanied by other benefits, including a longer operating lifetime as well as a safer and more durable product.

Energy Savings Estimates of Light Emitting Diodes in Niche Lighting Applications

Later in this report section I found this:

The 2007 energy savings potential of 5.97 TWh per year is equivalent to 64.4 TBtu per year of primary energy savings,

Can anyone spot the problem with the DOE math? There are 3.412 Btus per watt hour.

I like LEDs and agree with the safety issues. I think the DOE made a SWAG on their estimate for policy reasons.

As a Jewish American I can only conclude one thing. Merry Christmas and light up the night with as many lights as you can.

There is a reason that Americans buy their Gasoline by the Gallon and not by the Liter.

We’re Americans damn it!

Time to watch the opening scene in Patton with old George standing in front of the biggest damn American Flag this side of Texas.

My Star Shower laser light that shines red and green dots all over our house comes on automatically at nightfall, and shines until dawn. We’ll see what it did to our electricity bill when the bills come. Not worried.
