60 Minutes goes inside Apple’s weekly exec meeting, design studio, spaceship campus, & more
9 to 5 Mac ^ | December 20, 2015 | Chance Miller

As expected, this weekend’s episode of 60 Minutes on CBS was chockfull of Apple news and anecdotes. Retail chief Angela Ahrendts, design head Jony Ive, CEO Tim Cook, and many more all joined host Charlie Rose to discuss a wide range of topics, including encryption, terrorism, design, retail, and much more…

First off, Cook again talked about how users shouldn’t have to choose between privacy and national security. “I think that’s an overly simplistic view,” Cook explained. “We’re America. We should have both.” Building on that, Cook reiterated the fact that there shouldn’t be a backdoor for anybody into consumer devices. This is a stance Cook has taken many times in the past, despite the recent issues of terror around the world.

Cook explained that iOS devices nowadays hold so much personal information, including health data, financial data, intimate conversations, and much more. It takes a special key to access that data, Cook said. And that’s a key to which even Apple doesn’t have access.

"If there's a way to get in, somebody will find the way in. There have been people who suggest that we should have a back door. But the reality is if you put a back door in, that back door's for everybody, for good guys and bad guys."

Moving on, Cook and Rose discussed Apple’s use of Chinese labor and some of the issues that go along with it. Cook said that Apple’s use of foreign labor has nothing to do with wages, but rather with the skills that those workers possess and many American workers lack. This, Cook explained, is due to China putting an enormous focus on manufacturing, while the U.S. moved away from a focus on vocational skills:

“Bug off, asshat. “

Listen, kid, I could care less about your juvenile insults, but thanks for showing what type of childish idiot is an Apple supporter. I am sure Apple appreciates that.

Make sure to pay Jim for the use of his website, bandwidth thief.

Way to take Cook’s comments out of context.

He said that the reason they have the manufacturing in China is because of the 1 million Chinese workers. When Charlie Rose challenged him about whether or not he was implying that the Chinese are better workers Cook said; “NO”. He said (paraphrasing here) that in the US we’ve set up our entire ed system on going to a 4 year university, that we’ve essentially abandoned vocational schools and that the Chinese are training people for the kind of workers they need and that we are NOT. He is right and he is not the only one saying it.

He was also asked about the $48 billion in earnings overseas that they don’t pay US taxes on and why they don’t bring that money home - Cook’s answer was that HE WANTED TO BRING THE MONEY HOME but our corporate tax rate would cost Apple 40% and that the current corporate tax system was set up for the industrial age and should have been changed a long time ago.

Of the two things listed above they are positions that most conservatives believe and support. Now some on here may not like Apple or it’s products, fine, but don’t let that blind you to the truth of what the man said. I watched the segments about Apple and thought it was interesting - his answers to many of Charlie Rose’s questions surprised me.

I don't need to count them, id10t. I keep the list of every single one of them. I add and remove members as they request it. I added three last week. YOU try counting them . . . and then get back to me. If they don't want to be on the list, ALL they have to do is ask to be dropped off. Some do. Most don't.

There are DOZENS of interest groups on Freerepublic, asshat. . . this is merely one of them. I have taken the liberty of pinging three of them managers of other Ping/Special Interest lists. In this dayglored, manager of the Microsoft Windows Ping list, ThunderSleeps, manager of the Android ping list, and Shadow Ace, manager of the Tech ping list. Maybe they can set you straight. . .

Any other member of the Apple ping list can also chime in and tell this troll straight if they choose, but I am not going to bother ping all 700 plus. It's not worth their time. Now, troll, go back under your bridge and go pick your fleas off your belly.

Kids troll places where they are not wanted. You are the juvenile delinquent here, the trespasser. You are the one throwing spit wads in class, the one loudly making unwelcome comments, and farting in public. YOU are the one acting like a 13 year old asshat, amusing yourself at the expense of others. YOU don't have to be here making a nuisance of yourself. BUG OFF, ASSHAT.

JR has given his blessings to these threads and told YOU to cut it out, multiple times. YOU should listen to him, but you do not; you ignore it. YOU are the one who is misbehaving.

60 minutes, one of the leading NEWS programs in media, considers this an important NEWS story about the largest and most valuable corporation in the world, and dedicated an entire one-hour NEWS PROGRAM to coverage of it. . . yet YOU, in your infinite wisdom, declare it "social marketing." Right, sure. You are so smart. NOT. This is NEWS, not marketing.

Not once have you added anything substantive or of value to a single one of these threads. YOU have always been totally negative. . . usually with zero evidence to back up your comments. Just brickbats. Spit wads.

“the trespasser.”

Only a liberal thinks they should be able to speak without a response.

You post these social media Apple advertisements, we respond. THAT is how FR works. If you don’t like it then go post somewhere else, like DemocratsUndserground.com. You’d be at home with the rest of the Apple liberals. You know, Apple, the company that sells products to Americans but refuses to allow Americans to build the products they are sold, then brags about how much profit they have.

And you claimed you were not trying to slam Apple. LOL! A lot of those elements are NOT in iPhones and iPads. . . again, nice try. Where'd you get your messy listing???? A lot of those are not toxic at all.

If you don't like these Apple threads, read other threads. I have a find life and it seems YOU are the one who has the problem. I have an excellent reason for posting and responding to TROLLS like you with factual responses. 700 plus reasons, in fact. Those reasons are the 700 plus members of Freerepublic who all have personally asked me to keep them appraised of information about Apple, Macs, iPhones, iPads, etc. I manage the Apple Ping List. . . which has that many members. THEY appreciate these threads, even if YOU do not. They frequently tell me they appreciate them.

Have YOU got anything close to that number of Freepers asking you to make an asshat nuisance of yourself on the Apple threads posting non-sequitur, nonsense posts intended to slam Apple without evidence? I sincerely doubt it.

Here's a list of the not so green minerals, elements and the countries that produce them to make Apple 'green'. And, it is not just Apple. Most of these elements are toxic and that is why they aren't allowed, supposedly, into land fills. So, Bite Me and get a life.

I found your source. . . and it doesn't say: "Most of these elements are toxic. . . " As a matter of fact, most of them are NOT toxic. I manage a dental office and we use many of them in dental implant materials. . . because they are NOT toxic. SHEESH, quit making things up. . .

Also, that USA import list is meaningless for manufacturing cellular phones since none of them are manufactured in the USA. Again, nice try, but a FAIL.

Apple products contain ZERO Asbestos and ZERO Arsenic.

Diamond and Graphite? Merely Carbon.

Gold? Essentially inert for all purposes.

Silver? Not much of a problem.

Platinum? Same.

Copper? A bit more problematic, but not very toxic.

Magnesium? The body needs magnesium for proper functioning. We use it in alloys for some implants.

Titanium? Many dental implants and appliances are made of Titanium. . . when they are not alloyed with Magnesium.

Gemstones? ROTFLMAO!

Aluminum? We cook in it.

Quartz Crystal? Good Grief. Are you serious?

Try and find one that is toxic in levels in a phone. . . I'll grant you Arsenic. Even Asbestos is only dangerous in certain forms with exposure over years.

Only a liberal thinks they should be able to speak without a response.

You respond and respond and respond and it is ALWAYS THE SAME. . . and always lies. Why should anyone want to hear it anymore after the thousandth time you've made the same lying statements over and over again? We are simply TIRED of the same old, same old. You never offer anything of value, troll. Your only purpose is to make the Apple threads unpleasant to participate in. . . and you act in an uncivil manner every time you come into them. YOU ARE UNWELCOME AS A SKUNK AT A PICNIC. It is not about response. It's about civil conversation. You don't participate. You insult and throw brickbats. You paint the walls with graffiti.

You have been TOLD these are not "social media Apple advertisements" and you've been told by JR to cut it out. You should NOT be responding. If the owner of the site tells you these posts are OK, then that should be enough for you. You don't make policy.

You attribute opinions to me I do not hold. You lie about me. I have told you, and provided links to prove it, that Apple manufactures the Apple MacPro in the United States and assembles the iMacs in the United States. . . but YOU continue your lies such as:

"You know, Apple, the company that sells products to Americans but refuses to allow Americans to build the products they are sold, then brags about how much profit they have."

You ignore that EVERY OTHER COMPUTER COMPANY, and EVERY OTHER CELLULAR PHONE is made overseas as well. . . but at least APPLE is trying to bring their profits to the USA, not send them to KOREA or CHINA! Apple is an AMERICAN CAPITALIST SUCCESS STORY but you'd rather support a SOUTH KOREAN company or a CHINESE company? You are the delusional one. Microsoft makes far more political donations to LIBERAL causes than Apple ever has. . . yet you support THEM????

Microsoft's founder supports more abortions around the world and common core, and the more money going to Microsoft supports more and more of that? Say what? Microsoft was supporting the Gay agenda with CASH DONATIONS for ten years before Apple ever spoke up about it. . . yet you support them? Google and Android are in the pocket of Obama and the Democrats and you support are very anti-Capitalist and anti-American in much of what they do, yet you apparently support THEM? REALLY?

You don't respond. You don't offer cogent facts. You just throw stones. No facts, no evidence, you just try to shout anything down. YOU act like liberal students shouting down conservatives because YOU cannot stand an alternative voice. Asshat.

Posting Leftist company ads promoting 60-minutes MSM show. Keep counting there bud! This is great!

Please show me how Apple is any more leftist that is Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Twitter, or any other of the tech companies.

In fact, it is less so. Apple doesn't make political contributions like the others and only got into supporting LGBT when Tim Cook came out of the closet three years ago. These are facts, Honk.

Microsoft has been supporting LGBT for TEN years before that with cash donations and political support, before Apple as a company ever got involved in such support. Microsoft also has been making political donations to liberal candidates for decades while Steve Jobs prohibited Apple from doing any political donations. When a Democrat activist asked why Apple would not make donations to the Democratic National Committee, Steve Jobs answered, "Half of Apple's customers are Republicans. I am not going to piss off half of Apple's customer base by getting Apple involved in politics." He kept it that way.

Any donations you may have heard about in relation to Apple came from the Apple Employees' Political Action Committee. It DID make donations to political campaigns with a split around 90%/10% liberal to conservative candidates and causes. The infamous donation to the anti-Prop 8 campaign in California came from the PAC, not Apple Computer Inc.

Since the death of Jobs, and the appointment of Tim Cook, some of that has changed, but not as much as you might think. Apple supports Environmental issues, but generally only as far as they can improve the company's and Apple products' impact on the environment, and, of course, LGBT issues. They still do not do political anything. Cook and Apple are staunch defenders of Constitutional privacy rights.

Apple did not even have a LOBBYING presence in Washington until just recently, when the tax issue came up in 2013, when the DEMOCRATS falsely claimed that Apple paid ZERO income taxes in the USA, when in fact, Apple paid more Income Taxes in the USA than any other corporation, paying $1 out of every $40 of corporate Income taxes in 2012.

The Liberals are at it again, wanting to claim rights to tax Apple and other US companies' overseas earnings, even though they earned that money overseas and already paid income taxes on those earnings in the countries where it was earned. Our tax laws allow foreign companies to avoid paying US Income taxes on money earned in the USA so long as they pay Income taxes to their home governments, or to elect to pay US Income Tax and not pay their home country Income tax, which ever is lower. . . but the US government does NOT allow US companies the same option. . . instead demanding to DOUBLE TAX earnings of our US companies doing business in a foreign country, requiring they pay income tax there and then again here if the money is re-patriated. The USA is one of only two countries in the world that demands that.

Get some factual information instead of false MYTHOLOGY before posting.

I am a very nice person to people who don't come into Apple threads with huge chips on their shoulders as you did. Frankly, I am damned tired of all of those who do it. . . such asshattery is trite and boring.

You just don't like being called on your BS. . . and that is all it is. Bovine excrement.

So far you have offered nothing worthwhile on this thread. Your posts are not even useful for fertilizer. What was the purpose of that Graffiti filled unformatted MESS??? It provided NOTHING that pertained to Apple products at all. You did not bother to do any specific research about what Apple has done to keep toxics out of its products (hint, more than any other phone maker, Parmy!) You went and found some garbage from a propaganda site for Common Core and dropped it on us to harass me. Why? What did that accomplish beside making yourself look like an idiot? Go bother some other thread.
