MacKeeper discloses 13 million Mac users’ details with poor hash protection

Mac security software suite MacKeeper is recovering after a hack leaked millions of users' personal information.

Kromtech, the software developer, confirmed that it had received notice of the hack yesterday, discovering a hole in its security which was exposing customer usernames, email addresses and other personal data for as much as 13 million users. According to Kromtech, the hole was patched within a matter of hours after security researcher Chris Vickery had published details of the error on Reddit over the weekend.

The German developer assured customers that there was no evidence that the data had been accessed by malicious third parties.

'Analysis of our data storage system shows only one individual gained access performed by the security researcher himself,' said Kromtech in a statement posted yesterday. 'We have been in communication with Chris and he has not shared or used the data inappropriately.'

Ex-Windows expatriates are so used to having to use applications such as MacKeeper on their old Windows computers they were natural targets for such an application that offered anti-virus, anti-malware, housekeeping utilities to keep their new Mac clean and working up to speed they naturally thought they needed something just like it and bought it. . . unaware that Apple OS X on their Macs needed none of those things. In fact, MacKeeper TURNED OFF the built-in utilities that did all that in OS X. . . and some that MacKeeper did not do to boot. They were also oblivious that MacKeeper itself WAS Malware!

Hmmm. Not the same article, or even close, but thanks for the related referral nonetheless.

As long as more people are informed as to the difficulty.

Cheers!

What for, MacKeeper?

I mean, I realize the herd must be winnowed, but still!

Anything that pitches itself as malware does (pop-ups, dialog boxes, any form of controlling navigation), should be presumed to be malware.

MacKeeper responds to the fact that they don't keep their data sufficiently secured by essentially saying that their record show that only one intrusion got in. . . the white hat guy, so "No harm, no foul" since he hasn't shared the data he got. But, how do they know that a black hat hasn't been in who was more adept at covering his tracks? And the question remains "WHAT IN HELL WAS MACKEEPER DOING WITH THOSE DATA IN THE FIRST PLACE?!?!?" -- PING!

Just say "Hell NO!" to MacKeeper!
Ping!

Related -(semi) -historically significant... perhaps. :)

MacKeeper seems to not be such a good thing, if you look into it.

Just My Humble Opinion...

Problem is all the websites that take money to allow MacKeeper popups whenever they return a Mac browser. High and mighty websites at that.

You will not believe the number of big name photographers who fell for the scam and installed/paid for MacKeeper. It is an onerous task to uninstall MacKeeper since it places code into unlikely locations within the operating system.

EVERY MAC USERS NEEDS TO KNOW THIS IS CRAP.
