German scientists make big stride towards fusion

Scientists in Germany said Thursday they had reached a milestone in a quest to derive energy from nuclear fusion, billed as a potentially limitless, safe and cheap source. [...]

After spending a billion euros and nine years' construction work, physicists working on a German project called the "stellarator" said they had briefly generated a superheated helium plasma inside a vessel -- a key point in the experimental process. [...]

The German experiment, using a machine called Wendelstein 7-X, was aimed at seeing whether it was possible to heat helium atoms with a microwave laser and to briefly contain the plasma within the vessel.

The first plasma in the 16-meter-wide (52-foot-wide) machine, from one milligram of helium gas heated by a 1.8-megawatt laser pulse, lasted one-tenth of a second and reached a temperature of around one million (degrees) Celsius, the Institute said in a press release. ...

Better hurry before the Muslims shut down infidel science in Germany.

This is serious stuff, but honestly, I’m considering freezing myself just so I can come back one day and finally see it actually materialize. I went into energy engineering as a career many years ago, largely influenced by the concept of fusion and our harnessing the power of the sun, but at some point in life, I gave it up as something unobtainable in my lifetime. But, as I alluded to, there may be life preserving technologies just around the corner (similar to Fusion around the corner) that can get me there!

What a joke. The only thing “fusing” in Germany is the poor Germans and ISIS!!They will soon be hit like you won’t believe!!Many will die in the attacks and in the riots that breakout after.

Take your minerals and vitamins, particularly trace minerals, drink a good protein shake like from Natures Plus and stay away from soft drinks and all fried food. You may live to see fusion.

Damn, I’m good with that except for the mixers for my drinks. Does Natures Plus make tonic or coke-like substitutes?

Grrggle...Yawn...Stretch...

What's that?

Oh, OK...wake me up when they get it.

Let's put 'em on a real challenge or two...

After they finalize fusion energy, have 'em start that perpetual motion machine. Then get 'em to take 22 divided by 7 'til she repeats.

You remind me of the head of the US Patent office who suggested abolishing the office because everything that can be invented, had been invented. This was about a hundred years ago.

Or the scientist/philosopher who said that one certain fact in science was that we can never know the composition of the stars.

This is a canard. I forget the details. You look it up.

Or the scientist/philosopher who said that one certain fact in science was that we can never know the composition of the stars.

That was Auguste Comte ...

"Of all objects, the planets are those which appear to us under the least varied aspect. We see how we may determine their forms, their distances, their bulk, and their motions, but we can never known anything of their chemical or mineralogical structure; and, much less, that of organized beings living on their surface ... "

Auguste Comte, The Positive Philosophy, Book II, Chapter 1 (1842)

(Comte refers to the planets in the quotation above; he believed that we could learn even less about the stars)

This fact is often quoted, more to the glory of Fraunhofer, who obtained the first stellar spectra around this time.

But OK, where does that leave us?

Show me the money!
