After 12 weeks of the NFL season, the New England Patriots are still the heavy favorite to win the Super Bowl. Using Nate Silver's "2015 NFL Predictions," a model that rates each team and then projects how the regular season and playoffs will play out, we can get a better sense of which teams are the true Super Bowl contenders.
Heading into Week 13, the New England Patriots are still the favorite with a 28% chance to win the Super Bowl, down from 33% a week ago. The Carolina Panthers (20%) are the favorite in the NFC.
In fact, according to Silver's model, there is an 80% chance the Super Bowl will be won by one of the five teams:
New England Patriots, 28% Carolina Panthers, 20% Arizona Cardinals, 13% Denver Broncos, 10% Cincinnati Bengals, 9% The Green Bay Packers (5%) are the only other team with more than a 3% chance of lifting the Lombardi Trophy in February.
At the other end of the spectrum, ten teams can be scratched off as playoff contenders with less than a 5% chance of grabbing one of the 12 playoff spots. Those teams are the Chargers, Browns, Titans, 49ers, Ravens, Raiders, Rams, Saints, Jaguars, and Dolphins.

Sunday night was sweet for us Bronco fans....
Ah, well—We spoiled your perfect season already.
“I hope the Americaâs Team wins again.”
I don’t think the Cowboys have much of a shot this year. ;-)
“Go Patriots!!! What a great name for these deserved players. It is really cool that they are the only team with a conservative name.”
Back away from the Kool-Aid bowl... :-)
(On a side note - FR GET THE FLIPPIN’ QUOTE BUG FIXED!!!)
What are the odds that the Lions won’t be playing in any SuperBowl this century?
I am traveling (South Africa) and missed the game. I did see the highlights and was jumping and shouting in my hotel room. :-)
The flak is heaviest right over the target. I’m no Carolina fan but don’t be surprised if they run the table to the Super Bowl - and win it. They are better than anyone.
Go Pats! (<^..^>)
The NFL season is a war of attrition.
If the Patriots get some key players back, Gronk, Edleman and Amendola back they will win. All are currently projected to be back for the playoffs.
As a sidebar, the Packers win last night was exhibit A for why you don’t turn the TV off when one team is down by 20 at the half. Pretty exciting.
The title “America’s Team” cannot go to either these expansion operations. The Dallas Cowboys were created ONLY to chase the AFL Dallas Texans to Kansas City. The Boston Patriots didn’t even start out in the NFL.
“America’s Team”, if there even should be such a thing, would have to be one of the very early teams, and preferably one that hadn’t moved across country and has had a storied history.
If there must be an America’s Team, it would have to be Bears, Packers or Giants.
Oh yeah, the Pats will be back with a vengeance. If the Broncos face them in the playoffs, it’ll most likely be at their house. It be really tough.
Don't put too much effort it building the case for who should be "America's team." We have bigger fish to fry.
Last night's game against the Lions should drop those odds even further.
Subjective. Go ahead and make the case against it. Look forward to your qualitative analysis.
The female “reporters” that send me scrambling for the remote are the ones doing the teasers during the pregame shows. They sound like somebody doing a 1-900 sex phone line commercial with their overly-breathy, sex-kitten delivery. I just want to yell, “you’re there to read the line, not do a porno.”
These deserved players? The Patriots?
What planet are you from?
Hey not everyone is pro-American. Perhaps your dedication is to another country. You should be proud of a team named the Patriots but obviously you shun the United States of America. It happens sadly more in the Democratic party but I guess a few RINOs are part of the bash. Congrats. I just hope you aren’t a full fledged traitor.
