Debi Thomas, an Olympic figure skating bronze medalist, is broke and living in a bed bug-ridden trailer, according to an Oprah Winfrey Network show that aired Saturday night.
"I did the best I could," Thomas said, crying, in a sitdown interview (clips here). "I don't have a plan.
"When things aren't right, and you're doing the best you can, it can be really hard. I'm a kind of person who made goals from the time I was 5 years old, and then you get to that point in life, and you're like, this isn't what I was expecting, and I've got to go in a different direction."
Thomas, now 48, won the 1986 World Championship at age 18 and, in the "Battle of the Carmens," rivaled Katarina Witt going into the Calgary 1988 Winter Games.
Witt repeated as Olympic champion, while Thomas took bronze.
Thomas then graduated from Stanford with an engineering degree in 1991 and from Northwestern Medical School in 1997 and became an orthopedic surgeon.
Thomas said she was fired twice from doctor jobs and, according to the TV show, divorced twice.
Thomas, who lost custody of her son, moved to Virginia and into a trailer with her fiance and his two boys. She said that theyâve had domestic disputes that required police intervention.

I suspect drugs also. Also, who she is with those degrees - she can make money as a coach or trainer - or whatever the term is for skaters.
Wonder how sheâs doing?

Last I checked, still incredibly HOT!!!!!
Note she had lost custody of her two children years ago. Losing custody of one's children by court order is almost always caused by extreme behavior, i.e., drugs, alcoholism, cruelty, promiscuity, etc. Mental incapability is also a leading factor.
Now she's 48 years-old, she's shacked-up with another loser with two kids....and they're begging for money.
I'll add another reason for her dismal failure in life....no moral compass whatsoever.
Leni
I didn’t see where in Virginia she is located but it is epidemic here in the hills.
Thank goodness. She is...a singular woman.
I can't help that she makes poor life decisions, and I think it is disgusting that she is asking people to subsidize her bad decisions.
Can't find a job with those credentials? Come on!!!!
I smell a reality TV sow coming on.......
Man. That is why I am glad I do not travel for work anymore.
Too likely to get bed bugs. You almost have to burn down your house to get rid of them.
It is always the ‘better’ high end hotels that get them as they service all the disgusting scum that come into this country from over seas.
I know an addict and she is out of her mind. I also have an acquaintance from a previous job whose wife got hooked on them and ended up over dosing. Ruined her entire life.
Some people are really effected by them. I never had a problem with them myself and never took more than the absolute minimum to relieve pain.Never finished a prescription of them either.
Lots of people start with Oxy and end upon Heroin as it is cheaper and easier to get than allot of Prescription drugs.
My guess being a former athlete she has a painkiller addiction truly sad lost my first wife to prescription drugs they’re every bit as deadly as their illegal counterparts believe that
She's rich, still gorgeous, and turns 50 this very day today. Here's a retrospective of pics of her, both old and current:

Tell me more about this fogger machine.
Part of the issue is that prior to 1900 all drugs where legal. People could buy and use cocaine, morphine, opiods and anything else they wanted to use for a small price. Completely legal.
These people where addicts, but often functional. Now we have made everything illegal and addicts are subsidized by SSI and commit crimes to get their fix.
drugs or alcohol?
A broke orthopedic surgeon?
She must really be a bad doctor if she can’t even find employment in a public hospital.
Holy Moly! She got...bigger...in the right places.
Iyanla: Fix My Life airs Saturdays (9 p.m. ET) on OWN.
Oprah’s network?
doctors dont “buy” drugs. They have to be prescribed through a pharmacy like anything else. And if you hand them out like candy the DEA pays you a visit. Its a lot harder to get your hands on signficant amounts of opioids as a doc than you would think. They are not just laying around. Its a lot easier for patients to get lots of opioids by scamming different docs and getting prescriptions from multiple docs at a time. There is a state prescription drug registry that is supposed to help curb these behaviors as well.
