Massive Windows 10 Update Has Three Nasty Surprises (Threshold 2 Problems)
Forbes (Tech) ^ | Nov 14, 2015 | Gordon Kelly

'Threshold 2', Microsoft's massive Windows 10 update has brought lots of very positive changes... But unfortunately it has also been dogged by familiar controversy.

Nasty Surprise #1: The 44% Bug

Users have been reporting installation issues ... it gets stuck at the 44% mark ... In the official Windows Forum, Microsoft explained it may be to do with SD card issues:

"We've observed that some devices that have an SD bus with an SD card inserted while installing the Windows 10 November update will stop responding at 44%, and we are currently investigating the issue."
Nasty Surprise #2: Deleting And Changing Default Programs

Threshold 2 is deleting a number of installed programs as it upgrades... CPU-Z, speccy, 8gadgetpack, a Cisco VPN client, SATA drivers, SpyBot, RSAT, F5 VPN, HWMonitor and more.

Of course these can be reinstalled... but 1. This shouldn't happen in the first place, and 2. There should be a warning in advance, not just after they were removed... Many are system monitoring tools. Has Microsoft something planned in this space for the future and is quietly removing the competition?

On top of this... Threshold 2 users are finding it has changed a number of default app choices back to Microsoft services.

Nasty Surprise #3: Forced Delays For Recent Upgraders

Quite surprisingly, Microsoft admits on its Windows Update FAQ that new Windows 10 users are being pushed to the back of the queue for the Threshold 2 Update:

"If it's been less than 31 days since you upgraded to Windows 10, you won't get the November update right away; this will allow you to go back to your previous version of Windows if you choose. After the 31 days have passed, your PC will automatically download the November update."

Don’t. Maybe MSFT will get their stuff together by February or March. In the meantime, look at all the headaches you’ve avoided.

Frankly, from my Win7 system I Googled "site:microsoft.com upgrade to windows 10", like this:

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=site:microsoft.com+upgrade+to+windows+10

and one of the first few links got me upgraded. Honestly, I don't recall which it was. But I imagine they all get you to the right place within a few clicks.

So far, I like Win 10. It started out slow with a problem with my WiFi network card and BSOD, but I was able to work that issue out and it has run flawlessly for 2 months.

I have no interest in going back to Win8.1 or Win7.

Cool, glad you like it. It took me about a week of daily use to get used to the differences from Win7, but it's not all that difficult. It's quite usable and I use it now regularly with no trouble. Granted, I think the "flat and stupid" look of the Win10 GUI is ugly as sin by comparison to Win7 or OS X, but that's not a technical problem, it's just not to my taste.

> I have no interest in going back to Win8.1 or Win7.

Sounds like you made the right choice. Me, I like Win7, such is personal preference. But I can't tolerate the 8/8.1 Metro GUI for even 2 minutes -- I begin screaming at it and have to be restrained to avoid a scene or physical damage to the computer. Windows Server 2012 R2 is basically Windows 8 for servers, and it's a flaming disaster IMO. I've never worked with anything so stupid on a server. A Godforsaken nightmare.

Some people like it. They are more than welcome to my share of Win8 and Server 2012 R2.

But don't try to take away my Win7... and it sounds like you're that way about Win10. Happy for you!

I installed the update on both my laptop and PC, took an hour to install on each computer. It reminded me of when I first installed Windows 10 from scratch didnt know it was going to be that kind of upgrade so I was worried I would lose everything but everything is still here..the look is the same except now you see “I’m Cortana Ask me Anything” and whenever Im away from the computer I notice this little icon that pops up near the clock that says “Location set to on” it looks like a little target symbol not sure what that is about

I think that's letting you know that Win10 is broadcasting your current location (actually, your computer's location) back to Microsoft central for processing. It helps fine-tune answers to questions you might ask Cortana or other services, such as "where can I get a pizza at 3:00 AM?" -- it'll pick a pizza place near where it thinks you are.

Oh I was wondering what the heck that was, because I didnt notice it before this update. Is there a way to turn that off? I dont have a microphone on this PC so its really not going to be used

I have to believe there is, but I don't have my Win10 machine available to verify. You can try this search:

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=windows+10+turn+location+off

Big businesses can delay, but not avoid eventually installing the updates.

Well, unless they run the Long Term Servicing Branch (LTSB), and then they do not get any updates they do not want. Complete control.

I upgraded to th2--10586 last week. All went well and actually fixed a few minor issues like disksnapshot.exe popping up and losing my OneDrive Sync tool in the notification area.

I'm as pleased as I was when I first used 10.

Ummm, not so sure I'd call that "complete control". LTSB means you get security updates and bug fixes, but no feature updates, and no Edge browser -- you only get Internet Exploder. I don't consider that a good trade, unless you've got massive customer-written enterprise applications that require IE to run.

Oops

"customer-written" -> custom-written

Problems mentioned here aside, Threshold2 is a nice upgrade to Windows 10. It fixes way more issues than the relatively minor issues listed here (although the 44% thing is disturbing).

I work for MS, and can tell you that employees run this software, includng releases that don’t ever go public, for some time before the official release, Even with all that, and the Windws Insider program, there are always problems that aren’t found until the big release. It’s in part due to the huge and diverse spectrum of 3rd-party hardware and drivers that Wndows has to be compatible with - something Apple does not have to contend with to this extent.

But As an example, Apple’s IOS 9.0 was quickly followed by an iOS 9.0.1, then a 9.0.2, and now a 9.0.3. It happens,

Problems will be fixed as fast as humanly possible without taking undue risk of introducng new and worse bugs. If you’re concerned, wait a few weeks (personally I think that’s always a good idea).

I tried to upgrade from 8.1 shortly after Windows 10 came out, but after stealing hours of my time, all it did was a rollback. Without giving a reason. I would like to try again some time but am a little anxious that it would just make another rollback…

Par for the course.

Every time I’m thinking about buying a Microsoft machine, then they do something stupid to drive me away.

LOL! RSAT is the Remote Server Admin Tools package provided for admins to manage Windows environments. They're removing their own tools from the system. Let this be a lesson, folks, Microsoft isn't just out to remove competition.
