The 2-6 San Francisco 49ers are benching quarterback Colin Kaepernick and starting Blaine Gabbert this weekend against the Falcons, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday.
Niners head coach Jim Tomsula said earlier on Monday that he was "evaluating everything."
Later in the day, Schefter reported that San Francisco had traded veteran tight end Vernon Davis to the Denver Broncos for a 2016 7th-round draft pick and 6th round picks in 2016 and 2017.
Kaepernick, who led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2012 and the NFC Championship Game in 2013, is having the worst season of his career. He's thrown 6 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, and his passer rating of 78.1 is 28th in the league, per Pro Football Reference.

Separation of church and football.
Don’t want ESPN to say bad things about them.

Hereâs hoping they can find a QB that can play without an offensive line. Seattle has the same strategy.

Whoops, lost my parenthetical note, I underlined the current wild card leaders. BTW, Denver whipped Green Bay 29-10.

There must be a law that both Bay Area teams can’t be good at the same time, just when the Raiders are getting good, the Niners now look like the Raiders have been for years.

Heâs a good, young QB. Would LOVE to see the Dallas Cowboys trade for him!! I haven't heard of him having any legal issues or major character flaws so I'm not sure he fits the Cowboys system.

I moved from my lifelong home in the Bay Area eight years ago, ending up in Phoenix.
As a 49er loyalist all through the Golden Years of Montana and Young I've tried very hard to remain faithful to the team from afar through all of the turmoil of recent years.
This is the last straw. The Yorks may be the worst owners in football. With a heavy heart and moderate enthusiasm, it's time to do the unthinkable: buy a Cardinals hat. :)

He tends to lock onto one play and one play only Unless he runs the ball himself and that isn't working as well for him.

Pretty bad when you’ve been benched for Blaine Gabbert.
To: Red Badger
Why won't they call Tebow up? He's perfect for them................... Because they are a football team in need of a starting quarterback and not a third string one?
To: TBP
Kaepernick for Griffin? Griffin get's paid over $16 million, hurt or playing. No team is crazy enough to trade for a contract like that.
To: usurper; JimSEA
As does Detroit — in fact, the Lions have led the league in that category for a decade or more. ;’) :’(

Sooo.... the bottom line strategy for the Niners is to get rid of anyone associated with the team that went to the Super Bowl and the Championship? That seems to be the case - they now have only 3 starting players from the Super Bowl team still in starting positions - Staley, Bowman and one other offensive lineman (although the OL is not playing the position as he was on the Super Bowl team...)
