A company operating more than 1,100 clothing drop-off bins in New York has agreed to pay $700,000 to settle claims that it falsely advertised its operation as charitable while selling donated items for big profits, prosecutors said on Thursday.
*snip*
Two charities named on Thrift Land bins received a monthly fee of about $1,000 for the use of their names and logos, the settlement said.

As a side note, for years a thrift store near my house was run by a veteran's charity. And they had a donation bin in the parking lot.
Then some guy bought them out, and is running the place for profit. The bin is still there. I wonder how many of their customers are aware of the transition.
I BUY my clothes at the Salvation Army and Goodwil.
When I’m done with them, the only thing they are good for is to cut them up and use them for rags.
My brother and I have wondered about these new “for the world” bind popping up everywhere. We always drop by Goodwill or the local mission.
These scumbags really restore my faith in INhumanity. Why don’t they go to work for a real charity, like the Clinton Foundation. At least Hill and Bill give a few pennies out of every dollar to charity.
I knew of an aquaintance who worked at one of these clothing donation sites where he was a paid employee .
All the donations were bundled in large weighed bales
and were sold to emerging markets for their fibers and content by weight .
They were a "non-profit" as the employees made a living wage, and the director/CEO had an exorbitant salary, until there was no profit .
They complied with the letter of the law , but not with the 'spirit of the law' .

sorry...wanted to ping somebody to this.
My Brother shops at Goodwill all the time (cough) reselling the stuff on eBay
I guess your brother (cough) is at least letting Goodwill get the first round of profit on the items, if he’s buying them from Goodwill.
That doesn’t bother me at all. I see people at The Salvation Army every half-price day picking out the resaleable items.
I recently paid $4.50 for a dress for my 3-year-old. It still had the tags on, and we found it listed for $178 retail.
Just remember, Goodwill is a for profit company.
Goodwill is a great scam.
Its a great model, get all your good for free, sell them for a profit. Goodwill CEO takes home close to a Million a year if not more these days.
Before reading your post my bet was and is______
That the scammer company mentioned in this article is:
1) run by immigrant scammers
2) most of the clothing donations are baled up and sold to Africa and the Third World
3) The best items are culled out and sold here
You don’t need to be a scam Company... Goodwill scams millions and most are ignorant to it..
Oh and I forgot to mention, pay your disabled employees less than minimum wage, some of them as little as $1.40 an hour to work your stores too...
Goodwill does the same. They take the donations and sell them on Ebay. Our local Salvation Army store employees keep the good stuff that comes in. I once put a bag of kid’s clothes out for the trash. Within the hour a woman pulled up in a van who had 5 kids and was going through them. I told her to take the whole bag if she needed it. At least I know someone got benefit from them.
