Please understand that I am NOT challenging the pastor’s LEGAL rights, in any way suggesting that his actions were criminal.
But bad-assery aside, does anyone think that this may have been overkill?

Time to outlaw bricks. Houses to be built of sponges.

But bad-assery aside, does anyone think that this may have been overkill? Not really. The pastor had to make an exceptionally difficult call and that despite having attempted to help this man previously, his violent behaviour was not a direct threat to the congregation. Christ told his disciples that if they did not have a sword, sell their cloak and buy one. The pastor served his flock.

Standard firearms training. Shoot to stop the threat.
You put as many center mass rounds into the attacker as it takes for them to go down.

It sounds to me like the pastor probly had insight into the mans potential for stupidness and acted accordingly.

his violent behaviour was not now a direct threat to the congregation. Sorry, finger mis-appropriation...

Never bring a brick to a......naaah. too easy. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.
To: dangus
I do. Unless it was a congregation of infants.

Absolutely not! Self defense is a basic human right, and they used what they had to defend themselves

Huh?
Ability, Opportunity and Intent, the three foundational criteria of a lethal force encounter were met. Shoot to stop. I am certain the Reverend did not have equal-force brick handy, but then again, my Glock kinda looks like a brick too. Countervailing force was the problem solver in that house of worship.
Maybe some would consider an attack by a man armed with a brick to be a lessor threat, but not one willing to be killed or maimed by it....Perhaps too many folks take “Walker, Texas Ranger” TV too seriously.
