Note, the British offer is described first. U.S. offer comes partway down the article.
Microsoft has, for a limited period only, offered to pay up to £100 to convince UK consumers to part with their old computers in exchange for a Windows 10 device.
If a customer is willing to shell out at least £499 on a PC running Redmond's latest operating system, then the company said it would stump up £100 to encourage holdouts to upgrade.
The cashback offer falls to £50 for Windows 10 devices in the £349 to £498.99 price range, and drops to £30 for new PCs carrying a price tag of between £249 to £348.99, Microsoft said.
Customers wanting to take advantage of the frankly desperate deal will have 14 days to claim the cash following their purchase.
The payment won't be immediate, though.
Microsoft said it would take up to 28 days to validate the claim and customers are required to do the legwork by packing up their old laptops, desktops (including MacBooks and iMacs) and Chromebooks and sending them on to the software giant.
It's worth noting that the offer is slightly different for US consumers.
Windows 10 device purchasers who cough up more than $599 can trade in a laptop and receive $200 from Microsoft. But, amusingly, fanbois who pay the same price for a Windows 10 device can swap out their MacBook for $300.
Yup, it's official, Microsoft sees more value in Apple gear.
Anyone interested in the deal has until 20 October to claim back the cash in the US. While here the UK, Redmond said the offer stands until 27 October.
My 8 year old MacBook Pro can run the latest Mac OS (El Capitan). It does a fine job still running as a server.
I noticed that MS’s trade-in offer was for computers up to 6 years old. Hmm...
Qualifying items have to be purchased at the Microsoft Store.

Here is the list of qualifying items:

One of the items is:

$749.00
The price at BestBuy.com for the L55W (for which you can not seek the trade-in $200) is:

So, the great deal, you would only save $50, and would have traded in a usable machine.
Which is to say, TANSTAFL.

There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.
I wonder what they are planning to do with the few MacBooks they are going to get traded in?
Well, it ends in 2 days, and I haven’t even begun to look for a new computer. So, because I can stay with Win7, I’m not going to take advantage of this.
I may be sorry; but I’m not technically savvy enough to choose that kind of equipment. My guru-nephew lives out of state, and I won’t see him until December .. which leaves me with nobody that I trust to help me make such a decision.
And, I really don’t like the fact that you have to send them your old computer (although I can understand why they would do that .. I have the manuscript to my books on my computer (as well as disc), and I’m very protective of my stuff.
But, thanks for letting me know the info.
I'm playing with Win10 in a VM but I'm certainly not ready to commit to a Win10-only computer that might not even be able to run Win7 as an alternative. Although as someone else pointed out, one could always run Win7 (or Linux) in a VM and only use the native Win10 to boot up and launch the VM.
I thought the article and offer were interesting enough to post a thread on, but like you say, the timeframe is so short...
Sounds like a good time to upgrade from my current 386.
LOL.
That's gotta be an oxymoron if true. And anyway (I'll play along here) I think they placed a limit on how old the "old" computer could be, I think 6 years. I'm guessing a 386 would be, oh, 25-30 years?
I had a 386-based laptop (well, more like a luggable) Toshiba T-100 back around 1990, great machine. But after that I switched to 486's.
