Never seen a damn thing about 10 on my 7 Pro box, but I do not do any cloud thing, whatever that is. Updates are notify only, and I never do anything.
just open the start menu and start typing ‘remote desktop’. It will show up after you type 2 or 3 characters, then click the icon. This is a way quicker way to navigate the start menu.
Are your business clients not running an Active Directory domain? A $400 copy of Server 2012 R2 Essentials will give them the ability to run an AD domain and with it, group policy. Then, with group policy, you turn off anything and everything you want related to upgrades.
“Microsoft is now bundling three communications apps with Windows 10: Skype Video, Phone, and Messaging. Three apps seems overkill, but these are universal apps and their simplicity is well suited to mobile devices. This build integrates the Skype apps with the Action Center, so that if you miss a call, for example, you can call back or send a message via quick links. “
None of which I use, nor have any reason to do so.
I've got all that turned off, rarestia. That's not the problem. . . The users couldn't install Windows 10 if they wanted to. . . it's RAH-RAH pop-up ads that appear to be from Microsoft pushing upgrading to Windows 10 that interrupt their workflow and require them to hit a "go away button," which is very persistent and apparently is one of those that argues with the user. From what I can tell, they are not appearing on their normal browser or desktop, but rather on the proprietary browser/desktop of the vertical solution software vender. That, I have no control over, unfortunately, but the vendor claims it's not coming from them! Their system locks me out from doing anything by remote on their screen! HIPAA laws, you know. AAAARRGGHHH! I'm going to have to go look myself.
We use CITIX as a remote solution at work. This has no had any issues with Edge and Windows 10. How do you remote into work?
“Sounds like that unwanted update to 10 reminder is only on Win 8 machines”
All but a few of the machines I deal with are W7 ones, and they all had it and most multiple times since MS keeps re-releasing the nagware and spyware “updates”.
Odd, been running 7 for over 1.5 years and would know nothing about 10 other than from reading threads like this on FR as i do not bother with tech sites.
I’m running W7Pro on my “Big” ‘puter at home (home business CAD and finance plus the usual email and online services-—encrypted, of course) and have been experiencing some funny system shutdowns that may be related.
If I leave the box running while I’m out of the house for over a couple of hours, I come back to my login page and a note from Windoze sez “There was a Windows problem which forced a shutdown and we’ll tell you what’s going on when we figure it out” (or words to that effect).
I’ve had Update shut off and all the Win10 nagging crippled since just about the time this crap started. Don’t see or hear anything at all about either one, but I’m beginning to think that “someone” is trying to sneak some update/W10 stuff into my system and my homebrew security system is blocking enough that “they” just shut down my Windows and go away.
For now.
Jeez, I’m getting sick of this sh**.
Any more of my time gets taken away from my work to play these sillya$$ games and I may just start invoicing the bastards. At my Very Finest Premium rate.
I’ll have to say I haven’t seen update cause the kind of problem you describe, esp. since you have update turned off.
Since this happens after the computer has been on for a couple of hours, I’d look and make sure all of the fans are running properly, including the power supply fan. At the same time, make sure your computer isn’t clogged up with dust and hair and such, esp. the CPU heat exchanger. (I’m assuming from your description this is not a laptop, and though dust and over-heating is even more prevalent with laptops, the dust is harder to get out.)
Also, both semi-legitimate and malware programs running the CPU constantly at 100% can exacerbate overheating as well.
Download Windows 10 Insider Preview ISO
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewiso
Important
You’ll need a third-party program to convert the ISO file into installable mediaDVD burning software often includes this capability.
Remember, trying out an early build like this can be risky. That’s why we recommend that you don’t install the preview on your primary home or business PC. Unexpected PC crashes could damage or even delete your files, so you should back up everything.
If you want to stop using Windows 10 Insider Preview and return to your previous version of Windows, you’ll need to reinstall your previous version from the recovery or installation media that came with your PCtypically a DVD. If you don’t have recovery media, you might be able to create recovery media from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. You’ll need to do this before you upgrade. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer’s website for more info.
After you install Windows 10 Insider Preview, you wont be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.
Thanks.
Dust COULD be a factor, since The Homestead is still nominally a working ranch (got a real nice view of the North Rim of Yellowstone over the monitor), but Grandma is so anal about cleaning the housecat and small dogs all go into hiding as soon as she walks toward the closet where the cleaning gear is stored. (The little terrier tries to attack the vacuum and any broom/mop/duster hits the floor, but they’re all bigger than she is, so....)
Still, it’s been a while since I checked the desktop fans/filters, so thanks again for the reminder.
...but me run the CPU at 100%????
Ain’t happening. Gotta be dust or maybe even stray bits of the tinfoil hats that have gone into style lately.
Oh, yeah. ?sarc
If you have a contact with Microsoft, you might want to submit a case to them to investigate. It sounds like spam, and Microsoft doesn’t take kindly to people inching in on their wallets.
“...but me run the CPU at 100%????”
crapware and/or viruses running in the background can easily run the cpu to 100%, generating mucho heat.
The second time I installed it, it looked a whole lit different than the first. All my start menu shortcuts were there, unlike the first time, including mstsc.exe/remote desktop and it just worked.
Thanks again for the little nudge in the right direction.
You will receive my hefty bill.
The check is in the mail.
