THE UBER RUSH BUSINESS MODEL:
The real business for Uber Rush will be in becoming the delivery fleet for small businesses across a city.
If a restaurant is swamped with delivery orders during the lunch hour, it can sign on to the Uber Rush merchant platform and summon a courier to its doorstep to deliver the orders for it. If a small boutique wants to add same-day delivery for its clothing or books, it can add it as a delivery option (against the slower standard choices).
Where Uber becomes most efficient, and most like FedEx or UPS, is in its ability to pick up multiple packages from multiple businesses.
Perhaps the story and the title could be more reconciled if there were any evidence at all that FedEx can, will and/or HAS ever delivered a burrito/taco to any customer in a take/out/delivery mode.
Capitalism is fun to watch.
Which is why liberals despise Uber.
I don’t see it was a FedEx killer. I have to assume fedex banks most of its money for long distance overnight shipments. There is a place for local overnight in fedex for legal docs etd, so they may need to counter with something new on a local level if this takes a bite out of their profits. It would not be hard to create a city hub to transfer items same day. Sort of a mini fedex model with a central drop location for same day local.
I find logistics very interesting and they are very good at it.
Agreed.
I don’t really know anyone who uses FedEx for crosstown deliveries.
Seems this would be more about the intracity courier business.
Will the Uber model include insurance for important packages?
For anything other than crosstown deliveries it would have to resemble the pony express. I can’t see my vitamin company using this sort of service to send my vitamins 1800 miles...
Sounds like the perfect business model for the next Theodore John “Ted” Kaczynski, also known as the “Unabomber”
In a former life, between jobs, I worked as a courier. One day I made a delivery from Harrisburg, PA to Richmond, VA.
A man who was in Harrisburg on business, visited a restaurant/lounge in the evening and had left his blazer in the cloakroon with his passport in the pocket.
I picked up his coat at the restaurant and delivered it to the manage of another restaurant/lounge in Richmond, where the man would be attending another party that evening.
I guess that’s what makes the world go around.
I wouldn't go that far. Or perhaps they'll proclaim their contempt for the business model but use it anyway.
I've found that millennials use this service extensively. And most of them trend either slightly to severely mental... I mean, liberal.
Now that's a Delivery Service you can count on!
I used to be a Courier like you, but then I took two Bullets to the Head.
Agreed. FedEx ground is not targeted at local delivery. Uber might take over pizza / local but even for food an on-site person would be better for product quality/freshness.
Uber would be for non-perishable deliveries only.

They do? Most of the Uber-drivers I know (admittedly a small sample) are libs.
Like everything else, more than hate it, the libs just want to CONTROL it to death. Which, if they get their way, is just what will happen; they will choke the life out of it.
Only liberal politicians hate Uber right now ... And not enough to unleash their hoardes of minions. It’s mainly due to their contractor model when it comes to their drivers.
A contractor must pay all taxes quarterly. They have to write a check to the IRS which makes them less and less likely to listen to liberal claptrap about taxes. There are no deductions or anything like that from their payments from Uber. Liberals fear that model ... They need their money handed to them by force.
Watch and see if Amazon or Alibaba will use this service. Interesting indeed!
FedEx does actually have same day service in many cities. Uber would be a competitor in that area - a very small area...
Before long it will not be automobiles, but un-manned pod drones.
I love Uber. The drivers are very nice and friendly. Glad to see they are making it work.
How strange. I used to be a courier, like you, but then I took a strong Nord Valkyrie in stripper boots (And really, is there any other kind?) home from the meadehall.
Beats crippling injury any day of the week I Guar-en-tee. Or results in one. Depends... ;)
