Nap Pods to the People!
SF Weekly ^ | ue, Oct 13, 2015 | Julia Carrie Wong

DozeSF, the San Francisco nap pod startup, is moving one step closer to bringing pod napping to the people.

In case you missed it, a few weeks ago, SF Weekly took a field trip to this tiny new business that aims to offer a tech company amenity — to wit, 25 minute naps in $11,000 napping pods — to the masses. We enjoyed our sojourns in the vibrating Metropods, but we worried that, at $20 a visit, DozeSF would be out of the price range of the average working schmoes that owner Brandon Smith says he wants to help with his service.

Smith, a former tech industry worker, is a true believer in the health benefits of napping. "Despite what Doze is continually being characterized as," he wrote us in an email today, "I'm actually in this for the wellness, not the money."

That's why Smith has decided to change his pricing model. Customers can now choose to pay $80 per month for unlimited naps or "pay what you want" for each individual nap. Right now, if you register for an individual nap on the website, you can choose any dollar amount between $0 and $30 for your 25-minute appointment.

Smith says he's gotten a great response from customers since he opened up shop on September 28, but people who came for a free sample nap weren't sure they would return for $20.

"When asked what they would pay, many scratched their heads revealing that people (understandably) didn't actually know the market value of a nap. Or rather, the market value of naturally boosting focus, productivity, and memory, while reducing stress," Smith writes. "We just can't conceptualize any other option than those already quantified (e.g. most knew the price of coffee, a 5-hour energy, or Adderall)."

So get on out there and schedule your free (or discount) naps, yeomen of the FiDi. But be warned, Smith is minding the shop himself. If you come back day after day for a nap and don't pay anything, you might find yourself feeling guilty for not putting a monetary value on your priceless relaxation.

So in San Francisco a poor joe schmoe would have to work an hour and a quarter at the liberal’s idea of minimum wage for twenty five minutes in a head lice and disease bucket? Oh yeah, sounds like a real possibility!

I don’t need a felt helmet to do that in public.
