I miss Billie. For so many years she was such a big part of Christmas here. Remember when she made these ornaments for us old-timers?

How to Be Perfect
December 13, 2015
For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
Hebrews 10:14
Christmas is the time of year when the pressure to be perfect intensifies. We imagine the perfect celebration and then put forth our best effort to make it happen. We shop for the perfect gifts. We plan the perfect Christmas Day meal. We choose the perfect greeting cards or write the perfect family letter. But our striving leads to discouragement and disappointment when our ability to imagine perfection exceeds our ability to implement it. The carefully chosen gift receives only a halfhearted thank you. Part of the meal is overcooked. We find a typo in our Christmas greeting after weâve mailed the cards. Children fight over toys. Adults resurrect old arguments.
Instead of being discouraged, however, we can use our disappointment to remind ourselves of the reason Christmas is so important. We need Christmas because none of us is or can be all that we want to beânot for a month, a week, or even a day.
How much more meaningful our celebrations of Christâs birth would be if we would give up our faulty concept of perfection, then focus instead on the perfection of our Savior, in whom we are made righteous (Rom. 3:22).
If your Christmas celebration this year is less than ideal, relax and let it be a reminder that the only way to be âmade perfect foreverâ (Heb. 10:14) is to live by faith in the righteousness of Christ.
What expectations do you have for the Christmas season? Are they idealistic or realistic? Think about what you can do to focus more on Christ and the meaning of His birth.
Dressed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before His throne. Edward Mote
In todayâs passage the word righteousness stands out. It is important to see how Paul describes it. Righteousness is not achieved by works (v. 20); it is given freely to all who believe by faith (v. 22) and is demonstrated in the sacrifice of Christ (vv. 25-26). As verse 23 says, âAll have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.â But God makes sinners righteous through the sacrifice of Christ.

Letâs Celebrate
December 14, 2015
Praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe.
Psalm 150:4
After Ghanaâs Asamoah Gyan scored a goal against Germany in the 2014 World Cup, he and his teammates did a coordinated dance step. When Germanyâs Miroslav Klose scored a few minutes later, he did a running front flip. âSoccer celebrations are so appealing because they reveal playersâ personalities, values, and passions,â says Clint Mathis, who scored for the US at the 2002 World Cup.
In Psalm 150, the psalmist invites âeverything that has breathâ to celebrate and praise the Lord in many different ways. He suggests that we use trumpets and harps, stringed instruments and pipes, cymbals and dancing. He encourages us to creatively and passionately celebrate, honor, and adore the Lord. Because the Lord is great and has performed mighty acts on behalf of His people, He is worthy of all praise. These outward expressions of praise will come from an inner wellspring overflowing with gratitude to God. âLet everything that has breath praise the Lord,â the psalmist declares (150:6).
Though we may celebrate the Lord in different ways (Iâm not encouraging back flips in our worship services), our praise to God always needs to be expressive and meaningful. When we think about the Lordâs character and His mighty acts toward us, we cannot help but celebrate Him through our praise and worship.
How has this psalm challenged you to be more expressive in your praise to God? Spend some time thinking about the greatness of the Lordâs mighty works. Then give Him your praise.
Praise is the song of a soul set free.
The last five psalms (146â150) are also known as Hallelujah psalms because each of them begins and ends with âHallelujahâ or âPraise the Lord.â The psalmist calls for âeverything that has breathââevery living thing on earth and spiritual beings in the heavensâto worship God for what He has done (v. 6). We praise Him for âhis acts of powerâ and for âhis surpassing greatnessâ (v. 2). God deserves the full and joyous expression of our commitment and devotion, and we can praise Him exuberantly with singing and musical instruments (vv. 3-6).
