Why China Plans To Land On Far Side of Moon
coasttocoastam ^ | Chris Orcutt

Posted on 09/12/2015 11:38:43 AM PDT by BenLurkin

China plans to send an unmanned lunar lander similar to previous probes but with a much heavier payload to the far side of the moon. Due to communications issues with the Moon itself blocking transmissions, China will undoubtedly launch a relay satellite in geo-synchronous lunar orbit to transmit data back, scientists say.

The Chinese mission is set to determine how much of the rare element Helium -3, which exists in very small quantities on Earth, can be extracted from the purported rich deposits located on the moon's far side.

H-3 is a light non-radioactive gas that has the potential to be used as a fuel in future nuclear fusion power plants. If the Chinese moon mission is successful in finding the H-3, plans are underway to mine and extract this fuel-efficient element. The cost of the Chinese moon missions would be offset by the return in H-3 extraction and production back on Earth.

Helium 3 is very light…it’s not as if they are going to mine gold or diamonds or some such..

Every science fiction novelist has written stories about mining Helium 3 from the moon for decades.

. The dark side of the moon is supposed to be the side we never see, the side that faces away from Earth.

In other words it what we typically used to call the far side of the moon which is what my rhetorical question asked, and yes there was a smidgen of sarcasm involved.

Didn't we used call it the Dark side of the moon? Are we really that politically correct now?

Actually, far side is a better term since all manner of UFO believers think the far/dark side is never visible from Earth and houses an alien base.

Dark is a misnomer since the sun lights up each half the same pretty much over the course of a rotation around the earth. During a new moon the half we see is dark.

4/5 of the far side of the moon is never visible from Earth.

I know that Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon, is going to team up with FIT as soon as they can to map out plans to colonize Mars.

I’d be interested to hear his reaction to this, and if he thinks we should devote some resources to exploit this potential possibility.

But chances are he already knows the potential on the far side.

Also like to know what Senator Cruz thinks about NASA falling so far behind. I think he heads up a space subcommittee.

Political correctness is not only killing us, it’s embarrassing the hell out of us.

Since there is no controlled fusion reactor, the reiteration of this helium3 rumor remains goofy. Not surprising that it showed up on Coast-to-Coast AM.

“geo-synchronous lunar orbit”? Perhaps “lunar-synchronous” would be better. If the moon makes a complete rotation in about 28 days, how “high” above the moon would that satellite have to be?

On another note, I have always thought that the moon would make a great place to base an observatory. The near side to examine the earth, and the far side to investigate the rest of the universe.

Lunar synchronus orbit may not even exist. The earth gravity disturbances for something that far away from the moon to have a 30 day orbit would likely wreck the orbit before it got through the first revolution

Don't Touch the Moon

Don't touch the moon. I need it for loving.
Don't touch the stars. I need them, too.
All you frantic scientists, find something else to do.

Not his exact words but he's warned that they should be defunded if they don't get back on their original mission.

It would certainly have to have some means of propulsion to remain in moon orbit for any extended period of time.

It would make a great place to put some telescopes in an array combined with some on earth. Currently our telescope arrays are only as large as the diameter of the earth. Adding telescopes to the moon increases the size of the array to nearly 500,000 miles.
