TROY, Mich., - A Michigan woman who bought grapes from a Walmart store said she discovered a venomous black widow spider in the package.
Ariel Jackson, 25, said she bought the perforated package of grapes from a Walmart Supercenter in Troy and she discovered the spider when she started washing the fruit.
"She was screaming about a huge spider, and everyone was like, 'Calm down, it's probably nothing,'" Jackson's boyfriend, Michal Frank, 26, told ABC News. "But we took a closer look and lo and behold, it's a black widow. It had the red hourglass-shaped spot on its belly."
Jackson said she called 911.
"I told them that 'this isn't really an emergency, but I have a Black Widow spider in my grapes and I don't really know what to do,'" Jackson told WWJ-TV. "He kind of just paused and was like, 'kill it' and I was like 'you want me to kill it? You're not going to send anyone over?' This is a poisonous spider and he's like, 'yeah, just kill it and throw it away.'"
Frank said it took "quite a few sprays" of insect killer to fell the spider.
"It was definitely frightening," Frank said. "My girlfriend is still definitely shaken up. The smallest little things freak her out now. I mean, it's not every day you see a black widow spider."
Frank said a Walmart employee told them to bring the package back with the spider for a refund, but they decided to just throw it away. Frank said he and Jackson would "still really appreciate an apology from Walmart."
Walmart issued a statement responding to the incident.
"Our stores have procedures in place to help ensure products meet our high expectations for fresh, quality food. We take food safety seriously and encourage customers to work with store management so that appropriate measures can be taken to fully understand what may have happened."
Not anymore
Big gummint has relieved you of that task ... countries no longer have to identify themselves as point of origin
If you need proof the era of the rugged individual is over and Western Civilization is doomed, look no further than this story.
How is this news.
Are they rare in Michigan?
I am in NC foothills. I can find 10 black widows in my house at any given time. I could go underneath the house and see one within 5 seconds.
I guess that holiday in Australia is out of the question?
Oh Jeez, black widows are COMMONLY found in vineyards...obviously Walmart is a target of the author in this hit piece. Frikkin’ ridiculous.
“It had the red hourglass-shaped spot on its belly.”
Ahh, now I see it!...on the big one with the huge teeth!
Oh a spider? Lets call the news!
Look, a spider!
“Oh I was so shocked and devastated. I started going to a therapist. I’m afraid I will have PTSD now.”
Good grief, gimme a break.
Great cooked in oil with garlic?
‘you want me to kill it? You’re not going to send anyone over?’
.................
Good grief. What a wuss.
They aren’t found in Michigan vineyards but its also not uncommon to have them show up in shipped goods.
Years ago when I lived in Evart Michigan black widows turned up at the Accustar plant in town with -arts from down south.
Kill it and move on.
“she discovered a venomous black widow spider in the package. “
All spiders are venomous.
What a pathetic waste of human protoplasm.
Where’s Alice Cooper when you need him.
Someone needs to tell Rush about this. He loves the 911 stories.
She called 911!
She saw a spider and called 911. Unbelievable how fragile people have become.
The first responders should have charged her to the full extent for abusing emergency services. Then someone needs to slap some common sense into her. Quit being such a helpless little baby.
“Jackson said she called 911.”
Seriously? What is wrong with people??
Wth? Is that both a black widow and a brown recluse?
