Good riddance to MDA Labor Day telethon
Tribune News Service ^ | 9/5/15 | Mike Ervin

Posted on 09/07/2015 5:07:21 PM PDT by RckyRaCoCo

As a person with muscular dystrophy, I’m relieved to know that this will be the first Labor Day weekend of my adult life without a muscular dystrophy telethon. The Muscular Dystrophy Association announced in May that for the first time in decades, it will not organize a telethon to raise money.

The facebook comment by Robert Patrick Hartle under the actual article struck me as more poignant regarding society as it exists today...than the comments/views expressed in the article itself.

I spent many past Labor Day weekends joining other people with disabilities in protesting the telethon.

Jerry Lewis is still a genius.

>>It implied that as long as we remain disabled, we have nothing to offer or contribute, that our only hope was a cure. The telethon put forth the false and simplistic notion that the best way to serve disabled people is to contribute to behemoth charities that claim they will cure us.<<

I never ONCE came away with that impression from the MDA telethon. Jerry dealt with the victims (there is no other word) of this disease with dignity and actually screwed around with them alot.

Freaking ingrates.

OK, you think you can operate in society with no help? NO special wheelchairs, no special subsidies for help animals and subsidies for communication devices. No special pain-reducing drugs. NOTHING that costs money.

Just live your life tended by your family in your living room, the way it was before Jerry spent all this effort for 40 years (and he worked from the day after the Telethon until its execution the next year).

Stew in your juices, you ingrates and don’t ask for a DIME of my tax money, much less use any of the donations of millions of kind-hearted people all over the USA.

This reminds me of the deaf lobby who WANT to be deaf. And they WANT their children to be deaf. They think being deaf makes them SPECIAL. They get very upset whenever anyone talks to them about "curing" them. How dare you say such a thing???

Jerry Lewis raised a lot of money with very good intentions. Lewis really cares about people with MD. This guy is nothing but an ingrate.

When he got old, the bureaucrats in the MDA mistreated Jerry. When that started Many folks were done with them.

My next door neighbors daughter was afflicted with MD. I think I was 12-13 when I put together a carnival setup in the backyard and raised(heh)$12.51.

Over the years I watched the tireless efforts of both her parents dealing with a child with MD, learned to appreciate what true parental love was all about.

Lost touch with them many years ago, but I had heard through friends both parents had died at a fairly young age, not sure of the daughter.

Sad.

Let’s call it what it really is/was. Jerry Lewis WAS the MDA Telethon. His selfless work on behalf of “Jerry’s Kid’s” was the sole reason the Telethon was successful.

After the shabby way the MDA dumped Jerry, they quickly realized how important he was to the broadcast. No one could replace Jerry and it’s a sad commentary on what our country has become.

I’d ALWAYS dug deep for Jerry’s Kid’s..MDA...not so much.

Remember the kid with the Osama bin Laden t-shirt collecting relief supplies off a US helicopter after the tsunami?

Lewis used the well-worn Victim Posture to entice contributions. The writer here eschews victimhood, which is a healthy stance; but the fact remains, Victim demagoguery pays off when applied to the general public.

Do not ever doubt how much God was thrilled by your 12.51.

I did the backyard carnival for MD as well. Twice, about the same age.

I’d forgotten and was reminded by your post.

That's got to be one of the biggest worries, what happens if they die before their child.

Heh, not wanting to take 1 penny out of my donation, I found the money for the stamp(whatever that was at the time)in the couch, courtesy of dads baggy pants.
