Situated in the California bay's waters, Red Rock, also dubbed Treasure Island, covers three counties: Marin, Contra Costa and San Francisco.
According to legend, the island was once a burial site for pirate's treasure - though the discovery of any has never been confirmed.
In the early 19th century, Russian hunters trapped otters on the mass of rock, which has a private beach on its north side that faces Richmond Bridge.
Then, in 1964, the land was snapped up by Mendel Glickman, the son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, for less than $50,000.
He dreamed of transforming Red Rock into a popular vacation getaway, as well as tapping its gas reserves, it is reported.
When Glickman passed away, the island was passed on to his son David, an attorney, and later taken on by his business associate, Mack Durning.
'The Durning sons are the owners of record, and they do want to sell it,' real estate agent Steven Higbee, who is handling the island told ABC News.
Higbee, who did not list the property, added: 'It's kind of in strange limbo at this point. It's been dormant for probably three years.'

He was a great guy (black, college grad) who'd enlisted as a 'two year man' and ended up with a Logistics MOS; we were all in some weird cadre unit at CamPen and he had nothing to do other than hang with us clerks and drivers....who also had no clerking or driving to do -- but due to his MOS, he ended up getting promoted and before long he was a Staff E-6 with less than two years in. He was pissed that he had to move to the Staff NCO Quarters and leave the rest of us peons.
I got out, but stayed in touch.....turns out he also got out but, being very religious, got back in as a commissioned officer in the Chaplain Corps......which was his billet when we visited him. Here was this Squid Officer, and T.I. was his world.
...Last I heard was that he left after just a few more years in, and we sorta lost touch.
Funniest thing we'd laugh about was his rocker with no hashmarks - unheard of, and probably pissed off a ton of Lifers.
The flat "island" is all fill and it was used to house navy/military families. My close encounter with it was asbestos litigation regarding the stucco and drywall used during construction and the resulting mesothelioma lawsuits.
Got a better deal on part of an island in Casco Bay of Maine
House Island, Casco Bay, Portland, Maine
The three-home, 12.-8 acre, historic property has a new dock and almost 4,000 feet of waterfront.
HOUSE ISLAND, CASCO BAY, PORTLAND If it feels a bit too breezy when youre relaxing on the west-facing beach of the isthmus here, or if the suns direction isnt quite right, theres an easy solution: Walk about 20 feet over to the east-facing beach. (Or vice-versa.)
Or, such are the private islands charms, stroll to one of three other beaches on these 12.8 acres; or to the meditation garden, or the beautifully rustic fire pit area, or the croquet/bocce lawn, or along the new, expansive dock.
With just under 4,000 feet of water frontage, the exquisitely landscaped northeastern half of House Island affords seeming endless scope for exploration, and for rapt enjoyment of the enchanting, ever-changing Casco Bay views: across the sail-dotted waters past Fort Gorges to the Portland cityscape; along other islands shores and through Whitehead Passage between Peaks and Cushing; over to the shipping channel from which cruise ships emerge to enter the harbor.
House Island has been said to define the harbor, because of its central location, and has a rich heritage. These acres became the Ellis Island of the north after being purchased by the U.S. government for use as an immigration station in the early 1900s.
Today, following months of work covering the entire half that just now has been offered for sale, the island is beginning a new chapter in its history; yet the past is present, in the granite foundation enclosing the croquet lawn; the whimsical three-skiff garden alluding to local groundfishing in the 1800s, and more recent lobstering; and in the three century-old, year-round cottages that just this summer have been thoroughly, sensitively renovated to provide every modern comfort.
The property is ideally suited as a family compound for successive generations to cherish. Each of the three houses has a distinct identity.
The Lodge (main house) of 2,187 square feet, is nearest the dock; each of its four bedrooms has its own bath; every detail, from lovely tile work like the beach-glass backsplashes, to the grey-stone fireplace, says Maine oceanfront. The House on the Hill is four-bedroom and 1,806 square feet; highlights include a white-brick fireplace and a delightful beadboard bunk room on the second floor, and an observation deck.
To the south, the smaller, two-bedroom Cottage is also of classic shorefront design. The fourth building is the energy center of the passive-solar property, with caretakers quarters upstairs.
The House Island property is listed at $6.9 million by David Banks of RE/MAX By The Bay in Portland, and is being shown by appointment.

This island is just across from a an oil pipeline loading terminal, but that is expected in Maine.
Yes it is and even looks like it is Liberal resistance too.
Actually it was turned into a multi use facility during the base cuts in the 90s. That’s a different island, man made for the World’s Fair, then taken over by the Navy in WWII. This one is officially Red Rock Island.

No locals call it Red Rock Island, just Red Rock. I have actually been on it and sailed by it many times. It has many minerals and there are blast holes on the windward side. The soil/mineral composition give it a deep red color. It is small and ideal for absolutely nothing. Someone once placed an American flag on the peak but it is gone with the wind.
Right, see post 19. BTDT for fifty years.
I’m going to save my 5 million for something more useful. :)
My dad studied sonar and radio there in ‘44 and/or early ‘45. He told great stories about pinging ships in the bay. He shipped out as part of the Japan invasion force, but got occupation duty after the bombs dropped and Japan surrendered.
Knowing California’s draconian, worship-Mother-Earth environmental regulations, I bet you wouldn’t be permitted to build on or develop this rock in any significant way....
>> Treasure Island, covers three counties <<
Covers? The island is only six acres. So I guess each county is only two acres in area?
(I know that the American educational system is dreadful. But really, I expect better knowledge of the English language from a British newspaper.)
Imagine trying to mow the lawn. Get a riding lawn mower and wheeeeee! straight down into the water.
