Sciatica

Posted on 08/29/2015 7:18:38 PM PDT by Maine Mariner

Some medical advice from Freepers is sorely needed.

About two weeks ago I twisted my lower back and the result sciatica. I have been taking 3 200mg of Advil and 2 300 mg Tylenol every six hours plus alternating between an ice pack (wrapped in a towel) and a hot water bottle. I have also been doing some exercises several times a day as recommended by my physical therapist. So here it is Saturday evening and I am in a lot of pain. What is so discouraging was today at about 2 pm for a couple of hours, I was pain free. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Sounds to me like you are doing all that can be done. Except I take Motrin. If you can get your doc to prescribe the really good ones...they work.

Some days are better than other with this stuff.

Take a lot of drugs except between 2 and 4 PM Saturdays

I honestly don't know ... sciatica is a damaged nerve of some sort or a disc (as best as I can remember)

Drugging it is temporary and does not fix the problem

MY particular LB pain is the result of sitting for too many hours every day ... now so painful, excersize (much needed) is painful to accomplish

I take no meds, just try to correct the cause and strengthen what's left of a 67 year old abused back

Good luck ... I'll try to follow this thread

Whatever else you do:
Lay on your back on a rug, relax and do simple exercises to stretch your back and related muscles.

Pull your legs up one at a time, together; pull your torso up by your neck; twist one way and the other- all while lying relaxed on your back. Don’t force any movement.

Once or twice a day- every day. It’s more a maintenance than a repair routine but it serves for both.

my advice to you is to quit asking medical questions on a political forum, and go see a doctor.

It lasted for about two-three weeks when I suffered with it, slowly improving, so you may be out of the woods soon.
Yeah, it hurts.

I had sciatica for a long while. After going to a chiropractor a couple times a month for a few months, it was totally gone. I think I have had pain 3 times in over 10 years. Just my experience.

PS All those pills are going to screw up your stomach and who knows what else.

Stay away from the opiates; they’re easy to get addicted to. I was for a year (2010) in combination with vodka, and had to go thru detox. Oxycontin and vodka killed the pain 100%, but it almost killed me. Clean and dry since 1/9/11, now.

ok.. this sounds crazy but worked for me even as I doubted it would.

Method 1: If you can, lay flat on your back on floor. Twist at hip and bring your straight leg up crossing to other side. This would only turn your hip. Hold then the other side.

Method 2: If you are having a big flare up. don’t stretch using above exercise.

I had to go to E.R. to get a prescription for valium a muscle relaxer. (The body puts your muscles in spasm to try to protect the injured/pinched nerve so this relazes them.) I was given steroid shot & steroid pills to reduce swelling along with valium. I did not take pain pill although given prn. I have had to have a neve block in my back twice.. but suggest you try to avoid that using the above methods.

I don’t think it’s recommended to take Advil and Tylenol together for more than a few days.
All I can tell you is that neither one, no matter how strong the dosage, touched my sciatica in any way. A specialist prescribed some other type of pain medication—all I know is that it was strong, but not oxytocin—and the problem was solved. (I didn’t even have to use the entire prescription. After controlling the pain for a few days, I eased off the meds and was still fine.)

Be careful with doing the exercises too soon. Give your back time to heal, then go at the re-strengthening the lower back muscles at a pace that you can tolerate. Always a good rule of thumb is, let your body tell you what you can tolerate.

Learn exercises to strengthen your lower back, there are many to be done including stretching, just lying on the floor with hands touching toes, too many to enumerate here. Pain medicine is not the answer, it is a never ending cycle.

I understand dealing with the pain, but get off the pain meds as soon as you can. Liver damage.

Ok, I totally misspelled oxycontin. Actually, auto-correct did it, but whatever.

My doc showed me some stretches that really helped mine.
Those Tylynol and Advil are liver and kidney destroyers.
Try to get this treated with less pills if you can.

“my advice to you is to quit asking medical questions on a political forum, and go see a doctor.”

Ditto that. He has diagnosed it as Sciatica but doesn’t say where the pain is. Sciatica usually has an underlying cause which can be aggravated by injury.

I went through a spell with a kidney stone. Went to the emergency room and they drugged me up. They released me with a bottle of drugs that kept me souped up. I don’t like opiates and switched to Aleve. They had the same pain relief without the druggy feeling.
