When she was 6 1/2, Ashley Okura picked a kitten from a litter and named him Corduroy.
That was 1989.
It's now 2015, and Corduroy keeps on purring.
He's very mellow, unless there's a critter that catches his attention," Ashley said. "Then he perks up and he'll go after it.
Ashley's brother picked a cat from the same litter and named him Batman.
Batman died at age 19.
Corduroy is now 26 - and considered the world's oldest living cat by Guinness World Records.
"All of these types of records, they require a vast amount of documentary evidence to ensure that the age is being recorded accurately," said Kim Patrick with Guinness World Records. "In the case of the cat, it was a birth certificate, it was statement from the veterinarian who has been treating the cat its entire life, along with photos of the cat throughout the years.
What's the secret to his longevity?

I used to have a cat that looked almost the same. He was pretty laid back too (after we had him “fixed”).

We had a cat when I was a kid that lived to 22 years old.
Mom got Kippie the year she and dad got married, 1955.
I Was born in 1964
Kippie passed away in 1977, when I was 13.
Pretty tough for me since the cat had been with me since birth.

26? I was at a funeral a couple years ago, and the deceased best friend was a 30 year old cat that survived her. I had no reason to doubt the cat’s age as I doubt if they’d lie at a funeral.

We had a black runt named Poo that was with us for 24 years. Only when one day she acted a bit piqued did we ever consider she would possibly depart this World. She was active right to the end, and then was gone. She ruled over all the animals here at the ranch. She was the boss.

Let's hope Corduroy gets to see its third Republican president, and many more.

Gus, Big Persian cat we had (mom’s) lived to 22... He was never what I call an active or overtly friendly cat, he was just king of his little world. Last few years were painful to watch but he was able to hobble and use the restroom outside. Finally we could stand it no more, we had to put him down. He so reminded us of our mother that died 5 years earlier that it hurt, it hurt bad.
Bye Gus you big lug.

Our moggy is 15 and really slowing down- she can't jump up on anything taller than she is anymore, and is only awake long enough to eat, poop, and get a couple minutes of validation from her staff. Nonetheless, she's still a valued member of the family, and if she'd go another 10 in the same condition, I'd be happy.
