A sword found in Lincolsnhire's River Witham in 1825 bears a peculiar inscription that nobody can read.

...

The inscription on the blade reads +NDXOXCHWDRGHDXORVI+.

"An intriguing feature of this sword is an as yet indecipherable inscription, found along one of its edges and inlaid in gold wire," wrote British Library curator Julian Harrison.

I saw a story a while back where a woman inherited a box of cards all with the weird string of letters from a deceased relative. Knowing all the names of the family along with certain letter patterns, the crowdsource figured out most of the prayers.

Similar to the Viking Ulfberht Sword (inscribed +VLFBERH+T). This sword had inlaid wire lettering and resembles the sword in question.

How this sword might have been made can be seen here:

I think so too and that the prayer would most likely be Latin.

Sometimes the same letter will have a different form depending on whether it’s starting (or ending) a word, or if it’s in the middle. Just guessing.

It also may be that the lettering is one language with the pronunciation and word meanings in another. There are reasons it’s a mystery.

It’s a list of mandated Consumer Warnings before stickly labels were invented.

Stuff like:

Not safe for squires under the age of ten

Don’t raise the blade above the head in a lighting storm, serious injury or death may occur

La Belle Dame du Lac Smithy, Ltd. makes no warranty as to longevity of kingdoms acquired by the use of this product. The use of the product by bastard sons of the original owner is strictly prohibited and said warranty does not extend to subsequent owners.

Always make sure the hilt lock is securely engaged when children and serfs are present

In the event of product failure, securely wrap product in horse hair blanket and have courier deliver to:

Lady of The Lake

Thanks. Not my field. Although I’d suspect the first three letters indicate “in the name of the Lord, Christ.” Invocations aren’t uncommon on weapons.
