Windows 10 is a potentially great upgrade thats not quite great yet.
The new Microsoft operating system is an essential redesign. That alone makes it worth the upgrade, as I wrote last week. This week, however, Im offering a reality check.
After a week of constant use, Ive found it to be buggy compared to Windows 8.1. While not surprising for a new operating system, the point is that some less-adventurous consumers may want to wait to upgrade.
Windows 10 users have been documenting their challenges with the new Microsoft OS using the hashtag #Windows10Fail.
I wont go into the entire litany of problems (some of them are minor) but below are the standouts. Note that Microsoft issued a big cumulative update for Windows 10 on Wednesday to address a variety of issues. That update may, or may not, address some of the issues below. Time will tell.
The Start Menu: Occasionally buggy
The return of the Start Menu is the single most important change for many consumers. But its not quite stable yet. About once a day its not accessible for me. It either crashes outright or is very slow to respond.
Edge Browser: Needs work
The new Edge browser is fast -- when it's firing on all cylinders. But at times it stops responding. And at other times has trouble running some websites. (Gmail, for example, doesn't always behave itself on Edge). Again, not surprising for a spanking-new browser. There is an option to revert to Explorer, which may solve some issues: click on the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of Edge and select Open with Internet Explorer. My guess is that Edge will improve rapidly in the coming weeks and months as Microsoft issues updates.

Other problems:
* Applications dont carry over
* Windows 10 freezes: This is a hard one to call because its never clear if its Microsofts fault, the PC makers fault, a third-party software provider’s fault or all of the above.
* Firefox browser does not perform as well on Windows 10.
* Cortana is a work in progress
I received the notice that my computer is ready to download 10. Why would I do that any earlier than I have to?
I’m waiting for the new verson of BeOS.
As an IT professional, I specifically recommend waiting until the first service pack is out! (Or equivalent, under the new paradigm.)
I had the same reaction. I heard that we have a large amount of time to redeem our free version if we want it. I’m going to wait.
I had all kind of freeze problems with 8.1, but none from 10 yet. I’m having talking to my internet router and get booted off often, but not with 8.1.
Overall I’m pretty happy, but I need to watch it for a while longer.
As usual, product released before it’s ready.
Ever since Microsoft has been outsourcing to India, China, and the Philippines, their software quality has been crap.
wait until they get the bugs worked out
Beryllium Oxide is dangerous!...................
Windows 27?..................
It wasn’t that great to begin with!...................
About how long should I wait for the main bugs to be worked out before I install Windows 10? (I have Windows 7 now.)
I would recommend that you wait till they issue their first Service Pack.
lol
My $0.02: I upgraded my Surface 3 earlier in the week. Took a couple hours, but no problems/frustrations/issues. I customized the new start button and really like it now. I didn’t notice any problems with Firefox, didn’t try to use Edge or Cortana. All peripherals worked with the exception of one - downloaded a new driver for a quick fix.
Honestly, the upgrade was smooth and required minimal user adjustment. I haven’t thought about it since. Wouldn’t trade my S3 for anything.
“the point is that some less-adventurous consumers may want to wait to upgrade”
A choice I made and mentioned here 3-4 times already the past week.
