A 132-year-old rifle discovered on a remote rocky outcrop in the heart of the Grand Basin National Park in Nevada is still a mystery as researchers try to find more answers.
The Winchester rifle, which was found unloaded in November, has been shipped to the Cody Firearms Museum in Wyoming where it is temporarily on display among 7,000 other guns.
Museum workers said there are no records showing who owned the rifle and that its lifter was removed making it able to only fire a single shot at once, according to Fox News.

Why was it turned into a single shot??

After the gun was carefully collected and shipped to the museum, its weathered wood was stabilized with an alcohol solution before it was X-Rayed

You need to call in experts to figure out why an old gun was found leaning against a tree? Is this truly important news?

What the heck is a “lifter?” Is that a legitimate term or just more profound ignorance on the part of the author?

I am reminded of the scene in the movie “Jeremiah Johnson”, where he finds the old mountain man frozen in the snow, the man’s will written out on a piece of bark, willing his rifle to whoever found his remains.

    LOL.
We could write some horrible satire piece using the hoplophobe lexicon and terminology to make this rifle a time traveling serial killer that retired at that tree to live out its final days in peace.
Likely the owner is dead somewhere nearby, but very little trace is left to be found, if ever.

The rifle in question has a tubular magazine located under the barrel, as do many other lever action, slide action and semiautomatic firearms. Partially working the action allows a spring in the tubular magazine to push a cartridge back onto the lifter. Continuing to work the action allows the lifter to lift the cartridge up in line with the barrel so it can be pushed into the chamber.
So far as I know, it's a legitimate term, although there may be others.

Maybe the tree killed someone. I mean if Obama had a son I would imagine he would be as smart as a tree and just as dense.

Live out it’s days in peace? I think not.
It is the avatar that the left has been searching for since 1963. Their perverted version of the Grail. A myth, the rifle with the power to cloud mens minds, appearing only when the truly deranged beyond redemption ascend to power.
It has waited patiently, quietly, weathering through heat and cold, waiting....now comes its time.
The search is over...coming October 2016
