...Internet and getting a FEW Channels(Fox News, History, H2, and AHC etc...)?

We got rid of our cable over two years ago, and we haven’t missed it. We have Netflix, and our local cable provider still gives us the local channels, CSPAN, PBS, and a few others for free.

Over-the-air provides a solid number of channels. Everyone should do this, if it costs nothing more than Internet access (even with Internet, Over-the-air gives you HD resolutions, which are not normally provided with combo packs costing the same as Internet, alone).

Sprint offers those channels in packages that cost $10/month, and you can stream over your WiFi and onto your television from your phone (really only most practical for single person). This does not use your data allowance, by the way.

There are Internet-based streaming websites to consider. One had, I think, virtually all of the channels you described. It was offered by a Christian-oriented business.

I’m in the youtube camp. So much good stuff there. Free.
Besides, cable means you are sitting too much.

FWIW, "basic minumum cable" (which started out as a low cost utility) is $23.99 + $3 broadcast fee + $1.17 franchise fees and taxes. Then there's the $6.99 service protection plan, which is extortion, because when things go wrong (often) they always claim it is not their fault. That's $35.15 a month! For that they give me the basics plus two stations of folks blathering in hispanic plus one station that mostly sells stuff. They don't even include CSPAN!

One of my projects near the top of the to-do list is figuring out the best antenna option.

Check out the ROKU box and Netflix/Hulu Plus/Amazon Prime.

More sources are jumping into the streaming video, so look for changes in pricing and offerings in the coming months.

Of course, you will need a good Internet connection to make use of streaming video.

Cox Cable just upped their middle-range plan from 20 to 50 Mbps and from 250 to 350 Gb up+downloading per month. They are preparing for more 4k video offerings.

CBS, HBO, STARZ, Showtime are some that are in the process of developing Internet offerings that are separate from cable/satellite.

Note that many of the ‘regular’ cable channels can be accessed via Internet, but many of those do require a cable TV subscription. Collusion on the part of networks and cable/satellite.

Some sports concerns (NHL, MLB, NFL, etc.) offer standalone service through various devices (android tablets, ROKU and similar gadgets, etc.). MLB does state that they may black out some broadcast areas and those blackouts could include the Internet service. [That seems ridiculous to me, since I am on the fringe — 300 miles away — and my purpose in subscribing would be for games the cable company won’t broadcast.]

We can do without our former comforts for the sake of this war.

We cut the cable in February. Don’t miss it at all. We kept the Comcast internet and bought a ROKU 3. We got Netflix, HULU, Amazon Prime and Sling TV. Tne only thing we can’t get without the cable is Fox News Channel, although we can get clips of various shows like Fox & Friends, The Five and Brett Bair on Roku.

We have found most of our favorite shows. Look up Roku3 . Hat tip to freeper A Morgan, who recommended it!

I'm to the point that I watch TV about 1 hour for the five weekdays. Good Lord it is trash. If it was not for my wife I would stop TV all together.

I have heard that there is a movement ongoing to have congress pass legislation allowing consumers to choose their channels. Anybody hear of the movement?

I have 3 Roku’s. I suggest the version 2’s, not 3’s. They still have analog as well as hdmi outputs. 8$ per month for netflix, another 8$ for hulu (all the tv series I used to watch when I was a kid). Never going back to cable.

I do not miss my Direct TV at all. Had it for 10 years and cut it off 4 years ago. I saved coupons thinking I would go back and that did not happen.

Netflix ($8 a month) & Amazon Prime ($100 annually includes free music and ebooks) and Roku 3 (1 time only $100).

Get an indoor digital antenna if you want local channels news. sports too. They are A LOT better than the old school rabbit ears. You either have a picture or you do not.

I started working out to youtube videos. Lots of good stuff on there FWIW

I know - i learned how to do concrete to fix my garage floors- contractor wanted $3000 - I did it for less than $300

Same with my gas plumbing in the basement- contractor wanted $1800 to rip it out and replace it all- I tightened it up and fixed a tiny leak for $0 - completely passed gas company testing

i learned roofing, how to fix my car, flooring, tile, gardening- all from YouTube videos

And where I realized I could not do it myself, i hired a contractor but KNEW when they were feeding me a line of crapola- tossed TWO off my property for lying to me.

Agreed. TV is always the least productive thing you can be doing. Trying to make the plunge myself.
