A teaspoon of sugar: Many college kids are depending on sugar daddies to pay for their tuition
The Economist ^ | 06/18/2015

NEARLY three-quarters of the graduates now leaving America’s colleges are saddled with debt. On average, they owe $35,051. By comparison, roughly half of all graduates carried debt in 1995 and it averaged less than a third as much, says Edvisors, which tracks student aid (see chart).

As the cost of university has risen, so has the number of “sugar babies” who pay for it by selling companionship and sex to wealthy older men. Monthly pay for this is typically about $3,000, though some “sugar daddies” offer much more. According to SeekingArrangement, a firm based in Las Vegas, two-thirds of sugar-baby graduates have no student debt.

Students who post profiles on SeekingArrangement.com know what they want, so “it’s almost like a business partnership”, says Angela Bermudo, a spokesman for the company. The site hosts some 900,000 profiles of sugar babies enrolled in American universities, up from 458,000 two years ago.

Their ranks swelled during the recession and are still growing fast, says Brandon Wade, the site’s founder. A year ago nearly 1,200 students with an e-mail account belonging to an American university posted a profile on the site every day; the daily average has risen to about 2,000. The site has even stopped advertising online. Its ads used to pop up with search results for terms such as “student loan”.

The boom is fuelled by increased acceptance of “sugaring” (dating for money), says Steven Pasternack, the owner of a Miami firm known as Sugardaddie. The company’s site gets more than 5,000 new profile uploads worldwide every day. A quarter are students.

Oh I understand, trust me. Still, I wouldn’t be part of this even if I could find someone articulate, ink free, and without piercings in odd places.

Just curious, were these simply to escort men for functions? Or was there some longer term relationships involved?

Basically, for sex. I either bring them to the 'customer' for sex (which is cheaper) vs. escort to a function which is HOURLY. Men are generally cheapskates. Only the old geezers who have $$ ask for the function or party girls.

And if so, what happens to the relationship after graduation and the girls find jobs? I know MOST stop doing it as they don't want to embarrass their parents. Some continue as the money is really good. Do the sugar daddies then go on to the next girl? Of course.

When I was a kid, you actually had to marry them, I believe.

I think that the lesson here is that “women’s liberation” was the best thing that ever happened...for men. Whoever the man was who invented it will probably remain an unsung hero.

I suspect that those are REALLY, REALLY expensive, if available at all.

What makes you think these are all female students they’re talking about? And they’re idiots.

Would say the men are the bigger idiots—especially the married ones. What guarantee is there that the service will be “discrete”? If you ask me, these girls are in a perfect position to blackmail these guys if they want to.

Yes. I had several “Sugar Mommies” who paid for my college tuition.

And yes, they demanded sex as payment in return.

Hot, monkey sex. Sex on the marble floor. Sex in the limousine. Sex on the ironing board. Sex on the yacht. I don’t know how that ironing board got in there.

Sex sex sex.

And you would know some of these women.

Barbara Streisand. Nancy Pelosi. Jimmy Carter. Katie Couric. I don’t know how Jimmy Carter got in there.

Yes, you would know these women. They weren’t the ones paying me, but you would know them.

While my classmates were busy playing paper triangle football and trying to keep celery lit, I was slaving away in a mansion giving my Sugar Mommy some Honey Sonny.

I’m not proud of it.

Wait......Yes I am!

I graduated debt free with some great job references.

I consider this FAR more honorable than the females who get married thinking “if it doesn’t work out, I’ll just take half!”

THOSE are the true whores!

Not my kids ... Dad (me) said NO to Student Loans PERIOD, now if the EX signed for them, she can proceed at her own...
My way they work hard for Grants, work and emerge debt free.

(Present) 3 kids with double Degrees, one still going to school (Scotland for her Masters... says it is “way cheap”.

They do not discuss Loans with me since I Forbade them from the very beginning.

You ever notice, you rarely see homeless women?

I think it’s because, no matter how ugly or crazy they are, at minimum, they can trade some desperate man for a roof over their head.

“... increased acceptance of sugaring”.

Back in my day, we use to call it whoring. Sugaring is such a nicer term. /s

Oh. please.

When I was young, I took an admin job at a firm that offered tuition reimbursement. I took as many remote and weekend classes as I could, got as many CLEP credits as I could, and at the end of seven years, I had a degree, I had worked my way into a better job, and I had no student debt. Oh, and my self-respect. I was able to keep that as well.

It can be done, and you can do it yourself.
