A man has died of massive internal burns after mistakenly being served undiluted detergent, which was being stored in an empty bottle of white wine.
The 49-year-old man died of internal burns after drinking cleaning fluid he thought was white wine in the city of Benicarló in the Spanish province of Castellón.
Andrés Lorente was in bar Raconet, on Isabel de Villena square, for a Sunday afternoon drink on June 14th when he was served what he thought was a glass of white wine.
In fact the liquid he was served was cleaning fluid that had been stored in an empty bottle of wine and mistakenly been put in the fridge by a member of staff.
After taking a sip of what he thought was white wine, Lorente felt a burning sensation, according to local newspaper, El Periódico Mediterraneo.
In an attempt to cool the burning sensation he felt in his throat Lorente drank water, according to witnesses, something which could have contributed to the corrosive effect of the cleaning fluid in his body.
An ambulance was called and paramedics tried to resuscitate Lorente on the scene, before taking him to Comarcal de Vinaròs hospital, where he died.
The director of the department of Gastroenterology at Castellón General Hospital, José Antonio Martín, warned that ingesting even a small amount of such a concentrated liquid can be lethal.
It starts burning immediately, he told El Periódico Mediterraneo, if it is potent, it can burn and puncture the oesophagus and stomach.
Lorente's body will undergo a post mortem to determine the cause of death, police sources told Spanish news agency, EFE.
The owner of Bar Raconet has been questioned by police and could face charges. He is due to appear before a judge on Tuesday.
Wow. God have mercy on this poor man.
If it was stored in one of these bottles I can understand why he was confused.
Pungently aromatic bouquet, suggestions of lemon oil with hints of coriander and vanilla, a strange chlorine-like flavor, with a very strong aftertaste.
Chateau Drano. Not known for its flowery bloom and smooth finish.
That’s why you sniff it first.....
Sometimes one is hard pressed to tell the difference between cleaner and wine.
How could he have drank enough to kill him and not noticed after that first sip?
Lots of cheap wine might as well be cleaning fluid.
Did the guy guzzle the whole bottle?
It said he only took a sip.
According to the story it was the water he drank for relief, after the first sip of fluid. The water made it even more corrosive.
Law suit.
You didn’t read it did ya’?
Already drunk, is my guess.
That’s what I get for not reading the story. (I’m at work)
Thanks!
I’m thinking milk might have neutralized it.
If you start to drink something, smell it first, then if it doesn’t smell caustic try a sip. If it doesn’t taste exactly right SPIT IT OUT & pour it out. Do not drink it! Take your time, sip, don’t gulp!
“”How could he have drank enough to kill him and not noticed after that first sip?””
You would think it would have had a strong odor and that should have been enough to stop him from drinking it.
Real genuine rotgut, accept no substitutes!
As for the bar owner, I’d let him off with paying for the man’s family if he drank a similar sip. Having such in a wine bottle where it can be mishandled like it was - STUPID!
Of course these kind of actions are where our sometimes onerous food handling laws come from. Yes, we have cases where (New Jersey) low-end booze is sold in high-end bottles, but still, its not corrosive (much)!
