The adolescents had been involved in experiments that had been designed for measuring working memory and their ability for focusing their attention on information relevant to a task. The participants’ impulsivity has also been evaluated in a task that tested their ability to delay gratification. The levels of “sensation seeking”, the tendency for seeking excitement without thinking had been self-reported in this study.

Or maybe those teenagers with poor working memories have more unprotected sex?

Don’t recall any stories about clinton ‘girlfriends’ from his high school?
Did his mama allow him out after school?

Also despite his claims, his memory is fine.
Or was?

I have wondered about that too, for years. it seems logical that it would severely hamper emotional development and the development of intelligence, impulse control etc. Thus the Muslims marrying girls off at an early age would be disastrous for the girl. Many interesting and depressing consequences here.

If the hypothesis works out, how do they know the responses to the survey are accurate?

You mean correlation does NOT equal causation??

I think that they are confusing cause and effect.

The differing ways of handling poor impulse control in children:

Conservative parents: Correction and natural consequences where not permanently harmful. Children learn impulse control by desiring fewer negative consequences.

Liberal pedagogy: Alleviate the consequences of poor impulse control and poor choices at the expense of others. Make the consequences painless.

Well, apart from THIS... almost everything in our society stacks the deck against young people.

They stay immature for a VERY long time... some NEVER grow up.

I work with a young man who thinks the ultimate in life is traveling to amusement parks all over the country to ride various roller coasters.

He’s approaching 30. His wife has the same interest.
Every other week they both swap out their ‘phones’ for the newest, latest and most over engineered ones available... no matter what the cost.

Young people have NEVER got over their ‘monkeylike’ love of THINGS.

This is news? Is this not the definition of being a hormone driven teenager?

Its just in the 70’s, in my town, the sexual revolution never made it past the barricades on my block.

I think the poor working memory is more a function of impulsivity and attention span than it is of risky sexual behavior. If fact, the risky sexual behaviors are themself a side effect of impulsivity. the problem is impulsivity and attention span. the risky sexual behaiors are merely a symptom of this.

Your comments about poor Impulse control among liberal children is probably a very important factor re their failures, throughout their miserable lives.

"The differing ways of handling poor impulse control in children:

'Conservative parents: Correction and natural consequences where not permanently harmful. Children learn impulse control by desiring fewer negative consequences.'

Liberal pedagogy: Alleviate the consequences of poor impulse control and poor choices at the expense of others. Make the consequences painless.'"

In the book that is hated by left wing liberals, "The Triple Package" discusses why so many foreign children do so well academically versus our children.*

One of the three factors and probably the most important is the lack of impulse control by the failure group.

*The Triple Package" by Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfield.

Controlling impulses goes against the most basic foundation of liberalism,

that each person, being a “god” unto himself, should be able to decide right and wrong in the moment, and no “judgment”, including consequences, should befall him.

I’m in total agreement. The reactions of the Clintoon worshipers during the Monica revelations was a clear warning to the rest of us re the mind set of liberals:

“Controlling impulses goes against the most basic foundation of liberalism, that each person, being a “god” unto himself, should be able to decide right and wrong in the moment, and no “judgment”, including consequences, should befall him.”

Some idiots will conclude that the sex leads to memory problems.

As usual, most of these “studies” are interpreted backwards. The cause is mistaken for the effect.

why so many foreign children do so well academically versus our children

Dirty little secret about that.

It isn't true. Not apples to apples.

Here are some facts.

American children of Japanese descent perform better on standardized tests than Japanese children.

American children of Chinese descent perform better on standardized tests than Chinese children.

American children of Italian descent perform better on standardized tests than Italian children.

American children of Mexican descent perform better on standardized tests than Mexican children.

And so on for every group for which we have data.

The lone exception: American children of Finnish descent perform slightly worse on standardized tests than Finnish children.
