The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
The soil has been too wet to do much outside. Tomatoes are blooming in pots and little green pea size fruit has started. The yard already needs to be mowed again.
Hope you are all doing well. Have a great weekend. God Bless.
Pinging the list.
I have a question for potato growers. I planted some eyes. Waited a week for shoots to start coming up and when I didn’t see anything dug one of them up. There were very tiny, smaller than black ant size, black bugs all in the soil where I dug one up and everything of the eye except for the skin had been eaten away. Any ideas? What can I do to get rid of them in the soil?
I went to Plan B and planted white onions there.
Never give up!
We've been wet in central Tx. as well. Pretty impressive with an inch again today.
Did manage to get more cedar cut down and ready for the chipper but that's been it on getting anything done.
Have harvested plums and a few early peaches. And yes, they were spectacular!
Maybe it's the weather but the lemons have gone crazy. The fruit is (small) olive size.
And finally some blooms on the Pomegranate and Guava. The latter was sort of a lark as it was on sale and only about $5 and I had a place to put it. First year it's bloomed and wow, a very pretty flower.
Rainy up north here in NW Iowa too, greeneyes.
My garden is about half planted. Potato patch is doing well, and I’ve got it about half hilled. First two patches of sweet corn are up and looking good. It’s been too wet to get my last and biggest patch in the ground.
Rain is such a blessing, but the timing on planting so far this year has been tough.
Oh well, just gotta persevere!
May this next week. Maybe not.

TOMATO HELP! please...
Darn Beefsteak won’t grow up- it just keeps getting denser.
It’s TOO small and bushy: about a foot high and a foot across.
Brought home from the store and planted it about three weeks ago.
Had a couple cold nights that may have stunted it- other than that I’ve no idea.
Can I prune the heck out of it? Like whack off half the branches?
Do nothing?
Help...
My tomatoes and peppers are doing great, but my radishes are all tops.
The radishes have been in for 30 days. They’ve produced exactly two dinner candidates...
Look at the underside of the leaves - are there any egg masses there?
The best antidote for winter blahs: SPRING! LOL Great news and a great start on the garden season.
Good thinking. Don’t plant any tomatoes, peppers or potatoes there for a couple of years or so. Not sure what the bugs are. Colorado potato beetle comes to mind, but you should have seen some eggs on the underside of the leaves, and I’m not sure what the little devils look like.
“Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent”.
Not sure of the source of the quote.
Do nothing,
I grow over a 1000 tomato plants each year and 100 of them are beefsteaks. Beefsteaks are slow growing, and do not bare for about 90 to 100 days. I have had my beefsteaks in the dirt since April 1st and they are about 2 foot tall and wide. My early girls planted the same time are 6 feet tall and have tomatoes starting to turn red. keep the fertilizer to them (minus nitrogen) and you will be rewarded with many 2lb plus tomatoes.
I had watermelon planted in the same place last year. The vines grew like crazy but I never got any fruit. The potatoes never even sprouted, they were eaten away before they had the chance. Prior to the watermelon nothing had been planted there for several years. This is a raised planter.
I know you appreciate the rain! Play that old Gene Kelly song “Singing in the Rain.” I wish I had a covered porch. I would love to sit out on a porch and watch the rain come down.
Typical for Missouri Spring. Usually pretty wet, but it’s great to collect the water for July and August, so I’m not complaining.
One advantage of the raised beds, and Mel’s mix is that they dry out quicker than the rest of the stuff, so Planting gets done there more often than the other patches.
Is it possible the plant was marked incorrectly? We brought home seedlings one time that were supposed to be cantaloupe and we got a lovely crop of okra.
