For the Mexican War, I would recommend The War with Mexico by Justin Smith (New York: Macmillan, 1919), which consists of two volumes.

Ditto Lone Star. His book on the Korean War is also very good.

As regards the Alamo...Walter Lord, “A Time To Stand” and William C Davis, “Three Roads To The Alamo”.

A book called “Texas History Movies” is certainly the most entertaining way to learn Texas history, especially for kids. Warning, the earlier editions were NOT politically correct, and thus much funnier. These were handed out at school for decades. Ah, the good old days....

A fictional setting with an interesting look into Texas history through family histories; Texas by James A. Michener

Great read!

In my opinion, William C. Davis is the dullest history writer alive. He made a book about Jean Lafitte boring, for heaven’s sake.

“The Alamo” by John Myers Myers is much zippier.

Haven’t read his Lafitte book. Though I did like “Three Roads”, and am currently reading his “Look Away” on advice from FReepers. 135 pages in it seems a brutally honest account of the South’s futility. And I’m a good ol’ rebel.

I think he’s an excellent researcher and kind of a cutie, but not much of a prose stylist.

To each his own!
