You must see the 9/11 memorial. It is truly a place to see and remember all those folks who lost their lives. It really moved me.

AMEN! Last year I went to NYC for the first time...ended up there by accident...couldn’t get my jaw off the floor for an hour! Times Square was the same- again, an accident... walked up out the subway and just froze in awe...

Union Square was also a great surprise...lol—

We literally got on the subway and just explored...first night there- we got lost because my sis lives in Queens, we only knew how to get home using the 7 line and it got shut down - fire somewhere- LOL! once we lived through that and got home around 1:30 am— I was game for most anything

The Chrysler is quite a bit more decorated, and may be substantially less crowded. Check Google images. The interior completely blows away the interior of the ESBldg.

In the summer, it’s pretty likely you’ll have atmospheric haze, so what diff does it make if you are 103 stories into the haze or 77?

Walk around Greenwich Village.

Great idea.A few years ago my nephew considered attending NYU so I,his "surrogate father" (his Dad died when he was young) went along.Greenwich Village...Washington Square...is really cool (in spite of being populated by dirty commies).

Our local New York Life agent arranged for out class to visit their sky scraper. It was nice with a beautiful view. I don’t know if it is open to the public but probably a visit could be arranged.

The hipsters are in season this time of year. Head on over to Park Slope in Brooklyn, stand around Grand Army Plaza or outside of Ozzie's and you can see them flocking, preening, etc. If you want to hear them hoot just cup yourhands to your mouth and shout: Giuliani! Giuliani! Giuliani! They make a strange whooping noise, like white people make when they hate the man that is responsible for making the neighborhoods they live in livable, and then peck around for something organic and "fair-trade" while they type away on devices manufactured by Chinese pre-teens.

Lots of good suggestions on here. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I’m an NYPD Detective and I live in Manhattan, a short walk from Museum Mile. I know some good spots (not girlie clubs).

Things worth doing:
- Museums (take your pick). Any of classics are great - the Met, Natural History, Guggenheim, Whitney, MOMA, etc. There are also some pretty great lesser-visited ones as well - Brooklyn museum, Queens museum, (there's a great panorama/model of the city), Frick collection, and some others are worth considering.
- Yankees game. I'm a life-long Mets fan, but even I acknowledge that there's nothing like the history/traditions/etc of the Yankees (even in the new Stadium).
- Coney Island. It's not what it used to be, but it's still worth a subway ride out there to ride the Cyclone and the Wonder Wheel.
- Bronx Zoo. One of the best zoos in the country.
- Times Square/Broadway play. Most New Yorkers avoid the area if they can, but it's worth seeing once.
- Chrysler Building. Skip the Empire State Building. Shorter lines. Great view. Better building and experience all around.
9/11 Memorial and museum. I have never been and probably never will go, but I've heard they did a good job with it, and it's a moving experience.
- Central Park. Just go for a walk. Or go to Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Both great parks.
- Get a drink at McSorley's (oldest Irish pub in NYC

Things not worth doing:
- Empire State Building. See above.
- Statue of Liberty. Not worth the lines/crowds. Take the (free) Staten Island Ferry, you'll get a great view of the Statue without the hassle.
- Rockefeller Center. Worth it in the winter, for the tree/ice skating. Nothing special in the spring/summer/fall. Maybe check out the area if you're already going to an NBC taping.

Anyways, just my thoughts as a native. Feel free to message me privately if you have restaurant/other questions.

If anyone offers you, “loose joints” they are not sidewalk chiropractors.

And if you’re staying in Queens, go see a METS game! They are better than the Yankees this season, and the stadium is better. Some of the best food in all of baseball.

Walk into Grand Central Station and just look around.

Don't know how I forgot this. Definitely - very impressive building. (Just please don't do it during rush hour)

Since some one posted that the Empire State building now charges $50 per head and has long wait times, consider the helicopter tour here:

http://www.adrenaline365.com/helicopter-ride-nyc/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=*Helicopters%20New%20York%20(US)&utm_term=manhattan%20helicopter%20tour

The cheapest tour is $164/person for 15 miutes. Doesn’t sound like a long time but I had to charter one for an aerial survey and did all of Manhattan from Liberty Island to the norther tip with circling over 14 sites for photos i less than an hour.

It is just plain awesome and a singular memory that will last forever as a special treat. The flyover of the Intrepid was nice.

You can book and pay from the website. They do offer longer flights.

A spectacular first day event.
