Does Your Hospital Sell McDonald’s In The Lobby?

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has a beef with fast-food chains, particularly when they’re doing business with public hospitals. The D.C.-based non-profit recently surveyed more than 200 hospitals around the U.S. and found that 40 of them—around 20 percent—housed a fast-food restaurant.

Chick-fil-A leads the charge with 20 hospital locations, followed by McDonald’s (18) and Wendy’s (5); donut and coffee spot Tim Horton’s also makes an appearance. In terms of state saturation, Texas and Florida tie with seven hospitals apiece.

The report also points out some surprising anecdotal examples, like the McDonald’s attached to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, which offers delivery to patients.

“The junk food industry’s aggressive and irresponsible marketing has even been allowed to hijack the very institutions that are supposed to set an example: our hospitals,” says Dr. Aseem Malhotra, who is quoted in the report.

But it’s not all bad news. Since PCRM began compiling its report, Indiana’s Riley Hospital for Children closed its McDonald’s and St. Louis Children’s Hospital stopped offering Dairy Queen products.

“Let’s take it a step further,” writes PCRM president, Dr. Neal Barnard. “Just as cigarettes are banned from hospitals, why not do the same for meat, cheese, and other junk foods?”

Chick-Fil-A is “fast” but it is also GOOD!

Their salads are terrific...and since when is chicken considered “unhealthy”?

The waffle fries might qualify though...LOL!

Chicken isn’t red meat, that’s for sure.

I have worked during my professional career in some hospitals.

Just saying, some hospital cafeteria food is not exactly healthy in the way this writer would like to see. Not sure fast food outlets are providing a worse quality of food than would otherwise be sold there.

The hospital is making some money by leasing space to fast food companies. Should they not do so? Many hospitals are in financial trouble and need all the revenue they can get.

Even without official “Fast Food” chains, plenty of hospitals offer fries, burgers, or even Pizza as an option in the cafeteria anyways.

If hospital food is so healthy, why don’t the kitchens franchise into the public sector?

Well, you have to eat those fries RIGHT AWAY or they turn into the sawdust that they really are before the oil cools down(IMO).

Interesting that meat and cheese were labeled as junk food. It would be tough to recover on just veggies.

exactly. Even without a corporate fast food presence, hospitals don’t exactly sell cafeteria food which would pass muster with Michelle Obama.

Are hospitals going to be a new target of activists, to target hospital food, or target agreements by which hospitals get some additional income by leasing space to fast food companies? Do we really want to go there? Do we really need to micro manage the business end of a hospital to that degree???

The hospital where my first daughter was born had a great cafeteria. Their double bacon cheeseburgers with a side of chili fries were so good they should have been illegal!

Nothing wrong with fat. Just stop eating sugar, grains and processed foods.

What is a Quarter Pounder made of?

Ground Beef, bread, pickles, ketchup, onions, cheese, mustard...i.e., things we eat every day in one form or another. However, somehow when McDonalds puts these things together, they are considered "Junk Food".

It's all about liberals trying to tell people what is good, what is bad, and what is forbidden.
