This hole is so extreme (as if you couldn’t tell from the picture) that Fitzgerald had to use a helicopter just to get down to the green.

There is a similar par-3 at Cloudcroft, NM -- same concept, but extreme in another sense.

For one thing, the golf course lies at 9000 ft. The ball carries!

For another the hole is, as I recall, 280 yds. And the fairway is an old ski slope. The shot is steeply downhill.

The one time I played the course, I used a 7-iron, drove the green and two-putted for a par.

Re: “sweet little hiney”

Uh, oh.

I didn't notice that when I posted.

Just a matter of time before the Log Cabin Republicans show up and FR pulls the thread!

Re: “9,000 feet”

Yikes - that’s above the tree line, isn’t it?

Can they actually grow grass that high?

I noticed a few extra sleeves next to the tee box. How much are mulligans on this hole?

I may be wrong but the tee box looks like a mat rather than grass in that pic.

Pretty cool, though.

Notice the green is shaped like Africa complete with Madagascar to the lower right?

Is that the course behind the Lodge? If so, I was having coffee on the deck when two newbies teed off on the first hole. Because of the altitude, his shot went about 70 yards past the pin. His comment was, “Holy sh&t!”

Not the same tee as in the photo.

I was responding to an earlier Comment about a 9,000 feet elevation golf course in New Mexico.

Yes, indeed. And the elevation is the most important aspect of the course. You can drive most of the holes with a 5 or 7-iron. Totally changes the way you normally play the game.

Cloudcroft is far enough south that the tree (and grass) line is higher than that. The golf course there is, as I understand it, the highest in the USA if not the world.

Just looked it up on a topographic map and the course appears to range from 8663' to 8813' above sea level.

Thanks.

I’m mostly a weekend PGA guy, and I’m not familiar with that course.

I just Googled Cloudcroft.

The town has three live webcams on their website.

None of the golf course, though.

According to the website:

“Cloudcroft Webcam is a must for anyone planning a trip to the area or if you'd just like to see what's going on 9,000 ft above stress level!”

From Cloudcroft, head to Sunspot Solar Observatory.

Never had so much trouble breathing after a short walk. around 10K feet.

I lived in Alamogordo and High Rolls for 4 years in the late 70’s

Then there’s the NM Tech weirdness off the top of the mountain west of Socorro.
