Anyone know how TSA-approved luggage locks work?
So many questions...
If you don’t have anything to hide, what are you worried about? /s /s /s /s
The TSA has repeatedly been caught stealing from luggage.
I would assume if it is TSA approved, they can open it.
Therefore it is compliant but the contents are not necessarily safe from theft.
I think so.
I bought one so they could check my gun in my checked baggage. Worked ok and nothing was stolen...
TSA has a skeleton key that opens them all. Sounds like a good plan huh? What could go wrong.
I had a TSA approved lock, they cut it off, opened my luggage, searched in it, left a little note inside saying they searched it, and put in the crushed TSA-approved lock.
They didn’t steal anything.
We, I always thought you weren’t permitted to lock your luggage, so I learned something new today.

I’ve used small padlocks approved by the TSA on all my flight...here and overseas. If they’re approved, I’m assuming they have master keys for the various brands. I don’t fly that often, and as far as I know, my bags have never been searched. My son uses the same type of locks when he flies, both here and overseas, and has had his bags searched several times. As far as all baggage handlers having access to the master keys, in a perfect world, control of these keys would be limited only to the people who actually search the bags, and they would have to sign them out and back in after their shift ends...but this isn’t a perfect world.
They probably didn’t want to bother looking for the proper key to use, which is no excuse for cutting off an approved lock. Dumb asses.

Thank you; making that search didn’t occur to me and the government and airline web pages are a labyrinth of tail chasing.

Is it any wonder why these clowns are held in so low esteem?
I use a carry on that fits in the overhead. I also pack a box and ship it usps where I’m going if I need to. It’s easier and a heck of a lot cheaper since most airlines charge baggage fees now. I never check anything.
The locks have to be cheesy enough that a high school drop out TSA agent can easily get the lock open and steal your stuff. :-)

I could share your opinion of them AFTER they are done with me, but maybe not.
No standing in line to check/in. No waiting at the destination for your bag. Saves a ton of time.
Plus nothing gets delayed.
They can get into the locks and leave slips stating that the contents were inspected.
From personal experience, they will open locked luggage to investigate highly suspicious items such as gardenias wrapped in damp paper towels in plastic containers, frozen barbecue or coconut in plastic bags, bags of carrots or apples, grits, seashells, or especially heavy bags.
