A translucent orange gem engraved with an image of a goddess of hunting has been found near a mausoleum built by Herod the Great, the king of Judea who ruled not long before the time of Jesus.
The carnelian gem shows the goddess Diana (or her Greek equivalent, Artemis) with a sumptuously detailed hairstyle and wearing a sleeveless dress, with a quiver behind her left shoulder and the end of a bow protruding from her right shoulder. Both Diana and Artemis were goddesses of hunting and childbirth.
An iron ring that may have held the gem was found nearby. Researchers say the ring and gem were likely worn by a Roman soldier who was stationed at the site long after Herod's death. The soldier could have used the gem to create seals, pressing it into soft material like clay or beeswax to create images of the goddess, the researchers said.

She looks worried.
She should be worried, there is only one God, she is not Him.
Hey. That’s not Scarlett johanson!
Nice piece of artwork!
Very nice.
Nephilim.
Good thing the Isis guys weren’t around with a hammer.
Re “That’s not Scarlett Johanson”. Close. Johanson is Jewish though and is pretty as a goddess, or at least a princess.
The ring actually looks like SacaJEWaya (like how I sneaked that in?). People always thought that the American Indians were actually the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel (which is why so much archaeology in Latin America was sponsored by Christian-founded colleges. They were looking for those tribes). Sadly the Mayan Indians I worked with at Tikal had no idea what Matzah and Gefilte fish were. Guess they weren’t our brethren.
Anyway, an interesting archaeological find. (I’m a former archaeologist so anything like this gets my attention).

Look what Sunken Civ found!
Spring, and the snow will melt soon! Then you can start stalking wild asparagus along rural fence lines, and morels in the underbrush!
I’m on it, Pete! Spent the morning burning up a winters worth of burnables...could FINALLY get to the burn barrel! I added some fresh soil to my ‘early’ beds and will be putting in spinach, lettuces, carrots, beets and radishes this weekend - under tunnel covers, just for good measure.
Things are hopping at work - we had a week of 60’s and 70’s, so customers went NUTS buying seed and anything else that wasn’t nailed down. I LOVE it when that happens. :)
It cooled off again (which is normal) so we’ll have a tiny break in the action, but our Bare Root Room opens March 28th. I already have taters and onions in stock. Packaged roses, too.
Shameless Plug:
And as an added bonus, Mr. Wonderful popped the question on Valentine’s Day, so my dream of being a Farmer’s Wife is going to come true in the future, as well.
Life. Is. Good. I am Blessed beyond measure! Hope all is well with you and yours! :)
It’s me! :) Carnelian. Mmmmm! Pretty! :)
I think that’s just the consequence of seeing in closeup, looks like the likeness was made with a file or straight blade.
Is she squireling away nuts for the winter? Girl has some big cheeks.
