I have been ordering Amazon for years....yes evil company I know. So my family and I have moved to Florida to save the state from going blue someday.....lol. Anyway, Florida is a state tax free state. Well Amazon has been charging a sales tax for every item I have purchased since we moved here. I was talking to a neighbor and they were kinda surprised by this as they buy things to from Amazon. Well he went in and found out he is chafed too. I guess the rule is if Amazon has a warehouse in your state, you are charged a sales tax.
My point is that all these arguments over no taxes on the internet are nonsense. We already are being taxed on the internet. I looked up the states that Amazon taxes and it is a healthy amount. I guess the fight is over. Taxes are on the internet. Congress didn't act fast enough. Sad day for freedom again.

Yes, but it’s only those companies that have a business presence in a given state that will charge the sales tax. Of course, the big ones like Amazon are everywhere.

In VA you are required by law, to report on your internet purchases that are not taxed.

I wonder if they get 10 bucks annually?

Actually, my understanding of the tax situation with the states ... is if there is a sales tax charged in the state, then you owe that tax ... even if the Internet purchase doesn’t charge you tax. That’s always been the case.
The problem is that this is next to impossible to enforce. So, it’s never been the case that a person did not owe the tax (in states that do have the sales tax) ... they ALWAYS OWED IT. To get the Internet store to “charge the tax” on the invoice is the “enforcement mechanism”. So, the actual “tax situation” has never changed.

I know but it was nice to beat the tax system for awhile. I guess I did for a long time in Maryland, Italy, Korea, and other places. They caught up to me in low tax Florida of all places. I guess it isn’t something to brag about but we hate taxes especially dumb taxes like sales tax on the internet. Conservatives really should stop this tax.

Amazon has been opening distribution warehouses in various states. Sales tax is applied to items shipped from that warehouse to an address within that state.

Same for brick and mortar retailers, say like Home Depot, if they have a store in your state they must charge you tax on internet sales.

Yes, that is true about Amazon. Amazon has a warehouse in Dallas, Texas, and Texas went after Amazon a few years ago to collect taxes from people who live in Texas. Now, I pay that tax.

Amazon has warehouses and a distribution center in FL. They have to collect the sales tax in that state.
Ohio has no Amazon distribution centers. They have them in the states surrounding it. Ohio's is actually in the Cincinnati Metro, but it is in Kentucky.
I don't get taxed on my purchases from Amazon, but when I buy from Walmart and get it home delivered, I do because they have a physical presence in Ohio.

His point is that Florida does _not_ have a sales tax. So why is he being charged sales tax?
