My point is that all these arguments over no taxes on the internet are nonsense. We already are being taxed on the internet. I looked up the states that Amazon taxes and it is a healthy amount. I guess the fight is over. Taxes are on the internet. Congress didn't act fast enough. Sad day for freedom again.
Yes, but it’s only those companies that have a business presence in a given state that will charge the sales tax. Of course, the big ones like Amazon are everywhere.
Is the Interenet the next Internet?
;-)
In VA you are required by law, to report on your internet purchases that are not taxed.
Actually, my understanding of the tax situation with the states ... is if there is a sales tax charged in the state, then you owe that tax ... even if the Internet purchase doesn’t charge you tax. That’s always been the case.
The problem is that this is next to impossible to enforce. So, it’s never been the case that a person did not owe the tax (in states that do have the sales tax) ... they ALWAYS OWED IT. To get the Internet store to “charge the tax” on the invoice is the “enforcement mechanism”. So, the actual “tax situation” has never changed.
Yep, when they built their warehouse in Florida they started having to charge state sales tax.
Amazon has been opening distribution warehouses in various states. Sales tax is applied to items shipped from that warehouse to an address within that state.
Same for brick and mortar retailers, say like Home Depot, if they have a store in your state they must charge you tax on internet sales.
Yes, that is true about Amazon. Amazon has a warehouse in Dallas, Texas, and Texas went after Amazon a few years ago to collect taxes from people who live in Texas. Now, I pay that tax.
You should thank amazon for taking care of your tax obligation for you

Ohio has no Amazon distribution centers. They have them in the states surrounding it. Ohio's is actually in the Cincinnati Metro, but it is in Kentucky.
I don't get taxed on my purchases from Amazon, but when I buy from Walmart and get it home delivered, I do because they have a physical presence in Ohio.
No, you’re confusing taxes on internet access with taxes on purchases bought over the internet.
When the internet began, states started salivating at the thought of adding sales or telecommunications taxes to your bill from your ISP. The 1998 Internet Tax Freedom Act stopped those taxes (while grandfathering some states which had begun the practice). Check out Wikipedia’s article on Internet Taxes to learn more.
You can buy product by calling the company, or by ordering from a catalog through the U.S. mail, or through the internet. In all three cases, if the company you’re ordering from has presence in your state, you will have to pay sales tax on that purchase. You don’t escape the sales tax by ordering through the internet instead of ordering in some other fashion. And, if the company does not have nexus (a legal presence) in your state, you will owe a use tax to your state - essentially a sales tax on your purchase that you report to the state.
Nothing has changed re internet taxes. The only thing that changed is that you reside in a state in which Amazon has a legal presence. They’ve been collecting sales taxes for years and years in the states they’ve had nexus with.
just wait until after “net neutrality” comes to fruition.
Get ready for the tax after tax on your internet bill just like on your home phone or cell phone bill.... I expect there to be 20-30$ worth of government taxes on the internet by this time next year.
