Franklin County Sheriff’s Office officials say a woman was shot in both legs and her boyfriend shot through his hand after her gun went off in her purse Saturday afternoon.
Lt. Phillip Young said the woman’s Glock went off while the couple sat in a vehicle outside a residence in the 1400 block of Virgil H. Goode Highway in Bassett about 3:30 p.m. The man, who was in the driver’s seat, put a drink can in the woman’s purse before putting his hand on her leg .
“[The bullet] went through his hand, through one of her legs near the knee area and then hit her other knee,” Young said. “Her pocketbook was full of stuff. It’s hard to say what made it go off.”
Both the man and the woman were taken to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital. Their names, ages and conditions were not available Saturday evening.
Officials are investigating what caused the gun’s discharge, Young said. No charges were filed Saturday.

ps; I only carry guns that have a real safety. Not some imagined one.
Sounds like his trigger was ready to go off anyway.
I can’t understand how anyone could feel a free floating pistol with a chambered round was acceptable, without a holster - there are so many varieties to use in every circumstance.

This little anecdote is incomplete in the information department...Culpable individuals tend to leave out the details when they’re feeling guilty, and instead blame the handgun ...
“It just went off” is a meaningless statement...No, somebody’s finger pressed the trigger or mode of carry caused a foreign object to press it...
It’s more of a cautionary tale regarding the proper holstered carry of loaded handguns than it is of any risk of carrying a Glock...
People who carry any loaded handgun loose (as opposed to a good quality dedicated, secured holster, in good condition) in a purse or any other bag where it can get the trigger entangled in other contents are asking for a negligent discharge...
Properly holstered and left alone (no unnecessary gun handling) a Glock is as “safe” as any other pistol...Purses are for carrying “a pen, lipstick, roll of mints, or tampon” and such unless designed to also covertly carry a handgun...
Most significant factor in this ND is the apparent ignorance of the owner and her partner, not the make of handgun...
I put a can of Diet Coke in my purse sometimes. It’s a big purse. There’s no gun in it.
How can a soda can find it’s way onto the trigger of a pistol?
And further, a holster that completely covers the trigger guard.
I carry a G19, with a round chambered, in a quality holster. I've been known to have my G19 laying around (no kids in the house). It is on the desk in front of me as I type this. When it is out of its holster I do not have a round chambered. That includes around the house and those rare occasions when I have to leave it in the glove compartment. (small car, Glock in holster doesn't fit in glove compartment) Yes I realize that means my glock is in different states of readiness at different times. I assiduously follow the 4 rules of firearm safety on coming home and clearing it, and in preparing it for carry when I leave the house.
Most of the incidents I hear about involve Glocks.

A Glock will ‘go off’ when you pull the trigger. There is no way a Glock will ‘go off’ without pulling the trigger.
First, Glocks DON’T have a safety.
Second, any handgun without a safety needs to be kept HOLSTERED when not in use. Tossing it in a handbag (backpack etc.) with a round in the chamber is just plain stupid.
Third, I think there’s an odor of fish to this story...
Its not rocket science, the trigger was pulled. I don't advise carrying a round in the chamber w/o a retention holster.
Is that a machine Glock in your purse, or are you loading "magic bullets"?
I made the mistake of dropping a 9 volt battery in my pocket.Sudenly my pocket got REAL HOTand I started jumping when a quarter crossed the + and - electrodes.

Glock should really include a Holster with each H gun the same way the XDM has them included.
Heck, the XDM even has a grip safety where the Glock has none at all.
Me too. All of my guns (especially carry guns) have a safety of some sort. Nobody would carry a 1911 in Condition Zero in a supermarket yet that is how every Glock gets carried.
