Blizzard, the pup in Antarctica / photograph by Frank Hurley

A World-Weary Puppy In Antarctica, Circa 1912

This poignant image (cheer up, buddy!) of a pup named "Blizzard" was taken in 1912 by Antarctic adventurer Frank Hurley, who two years later would be the photographer on Ernest Shackleton's famed Endurance Expedition. This shot is from the First Australasian Antarctic Expedition, which set out in 1911.

Over a period of years, Hurley visited the frozen continent six times and came away with a trove of stirring images.

Sadly, dogs are no longer allowed in Antarctica.

You heard that right. Dogs are banned in Antarctica.

Turns out some leftist environmental group got a law passed to that effect. Some nonsense about dogs posing a threat to native seals.

They are still allowed in the Arctic however.

Also, there is a great collection of short stories involving dogs in the Arctic by Jack London.

Dogs went with Hillary to the Antarctic in the early 1950s..

I remember a competition to name a puppy born in New Zealand which would go with him...

all the school children got a chance to suggest a name but I don’t remember the name I entered nor the winning entry but for us it was big doings...

At first I thought Pupsicle was something Obama may have been given as dessert when he was a child in Indonesia.
“Just recite your assigned Suras of the Koran in front of the Iman when he next visits your Madrassas. Do a good job, and the whole class will have Pupsicles after lunch!”

My dogs are going to be happily comatose here in about an hour. My neighbor gave me a beef heart and liver so I cut them into chunks and put them in the crock pot for the dogs.

Dogs are banned in Antarctica.

Who enforces the law in Antartica? Does it have a bicameral legislation? Social ministries? Feudal Lords?

There are only several nations that have bases in Antarctica and only government planes go in and out of there. So it’s pretty difficult to get dogs in there.

My Doggie and I just shared a Bruschetta Pizza with pepperoni and anchovies as we watched the 2014 Met Opera Version of Carmen.

The Pizza was magnificent.
The “Carmen’ was dull, grey, and disappointing.

And Don Jose sang nearly every note a quarter-tone sharper than the orchestra. That is an amazing feat, and honestly, i don’t know how it was possible, or why he did it.

A new interpretation, perhaps?

Well, what can one expect from the Company that has given us “The Death of Klinghoffer”.

I half expect John Adams (Not OUR “John Adams!) to come up with a new opera called “21 Christians beheaded on the Beach” and make ISIS the heroes.

I’m not kidding.
