Henry T. Segerstrom, the arts philanthropist and visionary behind South Coast Plaza who helped turn his family's lima bean fields into one of the most successful shopping malls in the United States, died Friday . He was 91.
Segerstrom was known for his charitable giving – he made the largest single private donation in Orange County history, $40 million in 2000 to expand the Orange County Performing Arts Center – and for luring high-end retailers to Orange County. In 1978, he successfully courted Nordstrom, persuading the luxury department store to open its first location outside the Pacific Northwest, forever changing the Orange County shopping landscape.

He sounds like a very good man, at least he was extremely generous. And age 91 is pertty good...
This is a reminder that our lives are so very, very short...
fleeting, transient.
Try to get our of the cubicle (if you are one of the few so fortunate to still have employment) and find some useful, helpful, interesting things to do, too.

A good man, indeed. Hopefully, his legacy will be larger than South Coast Plaza, the conspicuous consumption capital of the world.
I have no beef with Mr. Segerstrom for it’s development, my hat is off to his accomplishment. On the other hand, the level of pretentiousness seen at S.C.Plaza is both laughable, and repulsive. I am happy for achievers, who have a fine place to spend their well deserved riches, but the place just crawls with wannabes whose greatest joy in life is to look down their collective noses, at the common folk.

Understood. But look at it this way,
all those “pretentious wanna-bes” are being seperated from their accumulated “riches” ...indeed, at a rapid rate, given the hyper=inflated prices at many of the South Coast Plaza stores.

It didn’t start out that way. I used to pick up a few extra bucks registering voters at South Coast Plaza and I think the big anchor store was Sears.
I didn’t move to Orange County until 1981, but I sure remember Sears being at South Coast. I did Christmas shopping there ! Thanks for your reply.
